View Full Version : 'Vette experts, your opinion please...
John Doyle Aug 4th, 04, 07:16 AM A friend wants to buy a original '70 vette, 454, 4 speed, 38k miles, a maroon color, power windows, no a/c. It's his brother-in-laws and it's in Alaska, of all places. He's telling me, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a show car, it's about a 7. original paint that's okay, but should be repainted. He knows it's rare. The B- in -L wanted $26k, but now he's down to $21K, (plus he'll have pay to have it brought down to NY.)
Is this a good price? He asked my opinion and I'm not up on 'vette prices.
Thanks,
John
67 Plum Aug 4th, 04, 07:31 AM Sounds a little high for a car needing paint.Believe it or not tell him to check for rust. The frames rust out at the rear suspention mounting points.Seems to show up on Fla. and northern cars that were driven in the winter.Dont know about his shipping costs but I would think mid teens. would be a good price.JMO Disclaimer : I am not an expert but I have owned 5 and do some work on others.
Codi Aug 4th, 04, 07:46 AM The price seems OK to me, but I agree, the frames are the nasty culprits on these vettes.
Scoop69RS-SS Aug 4th, 04, 08:04 AM I had a T-top 73. I wouldn't consider another unless it was a rag top. That car was so damn hot that on some days, we flat out couldn't drive it. Toss a big block in to that small space and it would be hell on earth.
I'm sure convertibles would let the heat out but I don't have any experiance with them. The price seems too high to me. 68's can be found for short money because of the frames. 69 thru 73 don't really command much more overall. (I'm talking drivers here.) No jabs intended towards Vett guys. I love the looks but working on them was no fun at all.
Rick.
ZZ430DropTop67RS Aug 4th, 04, 08:13 AM Just 38k miles?
Numbers matching?
I wouldn't sell for less than 20.
67 Plum Aug 4th, 04, 08:53 AM 38K is low, but Vettes didnt get driven like other cars so there are more low milage ones out there. Also low miles may not be good when they sit Vettes tend to have brake problems. If you are thinking low miles = original parts this may not be the case. I have seen low mile cars that had had alot of major components changed just from sitting. But just like Camaros every car is different. My point is look at the car real good and get as much history as possible on it.

Oh hell yeah! Check back by where the trailing arms mount!
I had a '75 that had this problem. It's not the end of the world, but it's a PITA.
Everett#2390 Aug 5th, 04, 08:06 AM 38k miles, it's about a 7. original paint that's okay, but should be repainted. The price of 21K is excellent. Car has been garaged I bet, so the rear suspension attachment points should be okay.
Biggest expense would be delivering it. Call A moving company, or look in Hemmings catalog or online for transporters.
Zedder Aug 5th, 04, 08:17 AM If it's original paint with no rust I'll give him $21K all day for it! Let me know if he passes.

Thanks for the info guys!

Zedder Aug 5th, 04, 09:52 AM Thanks John graemlins/beers.gif
clill Aug 5th, 04, 02:39 PM I would think 20K would be all the money for a low hp T-top 70 Vette that needs paint. If he has decided to buy a Vette, shop around and get what you want because the car you are talking about is not that desirable. Not being a convert kills it.
Zedder Aug 5th, 04, 04:46 PM While Clill makes a good point about desirability, the '70 LS5 454/390 hp cars are great drivers and the '70-'72 cars are still pretty good values. If the car just needs a strip and paint job and otherwise looks like a 38,000 mile car, it's worth the investment. That being said, $30K will buy you the best of the best LS5, so if he has the extra cash, that may be a better way to go.
djunod Aug 5th, 04, 06:23 PM Wow! Lots of opinions out there...
Some people hate convertibles and wouldn't spend the money on them... especially with a big block.
Sounds like a good solid car, especially with the original paint. Price sounds fine... the killer will be getting it home.
67 Plum Aug 6th, 04, 04:35 AM The price may not be bad for a car you can drive across town or a few hundred miles to get. But if you have to spend a $1000 or two to get it to NY. and paint it you can find cars for that much without the trouble. Its not really a rare car 4400 out of 17500 were 454 cars 6600 4 speeds. There were only 1200 LT1 cars.Numbers are rounded off.Worth checking into but not a killer deal.IMO As Zedder said 30K will buy you a top quality car I think you would have that in this car with shipping and paint.
I am by no means an expert in vettes, but once I downloaded a small program (VetteSet 775kb) that could 'calculate' the value of a vette and other nice options.
I have searched the net for a while and finally I found the website:
http://vettes.com/Votn97/usa/vtech/vtech4.htm
You can try it, and see what the value should be of that car.
Goodluck
pgreen Aug 6th, 04, 12:03 PM I had a 70 vette I pick up from L.A. Cal. Original windshield had rust under the windshield frame. The steel stucture under the fiberglass is what someone needs to check out. I WAS LUCKY, only had 2 inchs on both sides, some new metal and it was done.
I love the car. 70 was the last year of the higher hp motors. Good buy if it is solid.
