I have an 81 z28 with a fresh rebuilt 355 and am planning on converting the th350 transmission to a muncie 4 speed or th700r4. My problem is that i don't know of anyone that has done a 4 speed swap to a late 2nd gen camaro so I am not sure which one is better in the end for a daily driver with about 350 to 400 hp and a 3.73-4.10 gear ratio (not sure which one I'll go with yet) that will see a bit of track time. I am also not sure what parts I would need for either swap, or if any modifications would have to be done to the driveshaft. I have never done a transimssion swap so I am not sure how to install either transmission correctly so any help or suggestions would be extremely helpful.

Welcome to TC! We mostly do early (67-69) cars, so not real sure about an 81. Can tell you that the muncieand the t350 are the same overall length and use the same trans mount & croosmemebr location, bolting it in would be fairly easy. Most likely, pedals and clutch linkage would need to come from a doner (junkyard) car, and I imagineHurst makes a shifter to fit. The 700r4 is bigger, & longer and would need a different crossmember and driveshaft, but you'd avoid the hassle of retrofitting a cluch pedal setup.

Far as which one, s'pose it depends on whether u like to shift your own gears or not.

If you want mileage get the 700r4 or better yet the 200r4 because I don't think you will need to cut your drive shaft. The big thing with either auto is you need to get the TV cable set up correctly or you will ruin the transmission.

Check with some of the Camaro suppliers for a set of pedals if you can't score some at junk yard. I suspect they may be hard to find since there were not many 4 spds made in late 2d Gens. They sell pedals for first gens, but I don't know about 2d gens. If you go the 4spd route you may need to modify the hole in the floor to get the shifter in correctly. No big deal, but just be aware of it.

If you are going to drag race the car, stay with the 350 and get a performance rebuild and non stock torque convertor based on how your engine is built.

Thank you for the suggestions I think I am going to stick with the th350 for now until I can find a good donor car. Before I forget to ask does anyone know of any good sites or parts places that would carry bolts or hardware for a crossmember?
