What is the normal span between head dates? I have a 302 that I am trying to located a set of 186 march heads for...what is the normal date span between when the heads were casted? I have seen both heads have the same date, but I have seen engines with heads that had a week or two between. Thanks.

Next day? My 67 462's are dated I76 and I86, and my intake date is I106.

I have in the shop right now 4 engines from original cars and every one is within a 4 week variation. I have 2 near me at this minute, 1 BB dated K-3 on block, K-10 on 1 head and K-11 on other head, 1 SB date K-26-8 on block, L-9-8 one head, and L-19-8 on the other head. I personally have seen a month and a half spread, but the heads seem to be always very close to each other. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

Thanks...well, I have the opportunity to possibly put two sets of heads together...each set had a cracked head as its mate:) My engine is dated c-26-9...the heads are dated c-6-9 and c-31-9...would that seem unusual, or would that work okay? It would help me out and put a set of heads back together.

My opinion is it looks fine. Who would ever know on this one any way?;)

That spread is fine, as long as your engine ASSEMBLY date is 4-2 or later, which I would guess it is. For some reason the engines assembled around that time seem to have quite a spread between cast date and assembly date. Unlike the ones from the fall. I had a DZ block cast 10 - 3 and assembled 10 - 5.

Gambitt,
My 186 heads are a day apart, one A 30 9 and one A 31 9. Block is cast B59.
My opinion is get it as close as you can and then be on the lookout for the date/dates you want. You can always sell the extra heads.
