I want to build a 350 with around 400+ hp.I have never built an engine before.I have worked on them alot though.my question is what's a good combanation of parts to use for fairly cheap?pistons, cam, ect.I already have camel hump 186 ported heads.also are those a 64cc head?or what do I need to acheive 400 hp?when I say cheap I dont mean cheap parts I just want a good quality engine for the cheapest that I can build It for.thanks!

Seems like me and you are on the same path. I would check out an article in CHEVY HIGH PERFORMANCE called GOODWRENCH QUEST. They started out with a 350 short block from Scoggy dickens and used bolt on parts. Just bolted them on right out of the box no adjusting, no other work. They managed 416 hp and over 400 lb of torque all while spending around 2500 dollars complete carb to pan.

How about a plain 350 short block with flat top pistons and Vortec heads (the camel humps are OK, but I'd eBay them and buy some Vortecs instead). A light clean up job on the heads and a small solid FT cam.

I couldn't find the cam I was looking for in any of my catalogs, but I was thinking 280*/286* advertised duration, 230*/236* duration @ .050, .475" lift, 108* LSA. Use a Performer RPM intake, a Holley 650 cfm double pumper, and a set of 1-5/8" long tube headers.

Should make great power from 3000-6000+ RPM.

If you are pushing 375 - 400 horse um wouldn't you want a carb that is a lil closer to 750 cfm?

If you are pushing 375 - 400 horse um wouldn't you want a carb that is a lil closer to 750 cfm? A 650 can manage that kind of power easily.
