View Full Version : 68 RS/SS IS it really an SS?
smith69z May 6th, 05, 05:16 PM I am very firmilar with 69 Z information but I am not really sure how you can tell if a 68 is a real SS? Cowl Tag? Any ideas would be helpful since I am looking at this one Saturday morning.

Any pointers would be apprecated!
Thanks Team Camaro!!!
Mark C May 6th, 05, 05:40 PM Nope nothing on a 68 short of the original engine, transmission and rear axle stamps that will identify it as an SS. 68 SS's don't even need front disc brakes (except some late production big blocks). Paper work or original components are the only way to tell on a 68.
smith69z May 6th, 05, 05:55 PM Thanks Mark, From what I have found so far its the MS motor with matching VIN is the only way. That should be fairly simple. Thanks again for the quick reply. Not sure why I am buying another camaro when my 69 Z is so far from completion. Just want those projects lined up :-)
sicsD8 May 7th, 05, 07:33 AM Smith- Looks to be a few things not quite right on that car. I believe the SS over rode the rs on the horn button when both were ordered. Shifter doesn't look stock either. Check to make sure the seats are 68 with headrest, as that is a very rare option. 16k sounds a bit high with all the rust issues that one has. The rocker panel pinch weld looks a bit swollen (rust), so check the floor and inner rockers out good. I think you could find a completed car without the rust issues for that money.
Mark C May 7th, 05, 08:12 AM I hadn't looked at the links before but that's an odd duck of a car. Not saying it's not an SS or anything like that (cause I can't tell from the photos in the ad.), but it has an export cowl tag, and an US certificate of conformance tag on the top of the cowl. Basically the second tag has the same info found on the bottom of all domestic Camaros cowl tags. Looks like the car either was originally an export vehicle, and then returned to the US early in it's life, or it never made it overseas to start with.
sleepsinshed May 7th, 05, 08:34 AM The beauty of the 68's is that without the build sheet or sticker, it's so hard to verify what they originally were. This car looks like a good deal whether it's original or not. If this group is having trouble verifying it's authenticity, what are you worried about? My cursor is hovering over the "Buy it Now" button! It's a good thing for you it would take me a day to drive down there and check it out! Okay, so my wife would lock me out of the house, but I can still dream...
Keep us posted after you look it over.
COPO9737 May 7th, 05, 05:15 PM This is the same type of cowl tag that is used on the 1968 Yenkos
smith69z May 9th, 05, 08:55 AM Thanks for the info guys. I am torn between this car and waiting for a 68 Z with the RS option. This is a little more affordabel :-) and in this case I am licky, no wife to lock me out! :-) I'll need to check on that export stuff.
What exactly says "export" on the cowl tag??
smith69z May 9th, 05, 08:58 AM SICSD8,
How can you tell if these are 68 seatswith headrests? I would be able to tell if they looked my 69's. I'll check eBay to see what a 68 seat should look like.
Thanks again.
Kurt S May 9th, 05, 10:15 AM I'm confused why it has an export tag and a compliance tag. Only thing I can think of is a mistake where an export tag was used and shouldn't have been. And they then added the compliance tag. Never seen one like that before.
Note when the title was issued......
KevinW May 9th, 05, 10:31 AM Don, I called you Sat morning, but I guess you were looking at this car. How was it?
smith69z May 9th, 05, 12:08 PM Kevin,
Didn't get to the car yet. Had to work all weekend. ;-( I might be going tonight. That RS sterring wheel has be concerned. Trying to fing pics of a 68 RS/SS on the web to see what wheel it came with. I think it should be a SS not RS like was mentioned in this post. All my leaf rebuild goodies came today. Time to get the rear done once the car comes back from the media blast.
Flynn69 May 21st, 05, 03:14 AM I have no paper work with my SS,But has the original matching drive train. Where can I go to check to see if it,s real. Can you tell by decoding the motor vin number. Thanks
sicsD8 May 21st, 05, 07:27 AM Yes, the motor has a partial vin that will match the body vin. If your car is a 69 (I'm guessing it is due to your user name) then the cowl info will have info to support it as an SS. Post that cowl tag info. someone here will be happy to decode it for you. (start a new thread with that info)
