Looks like an easy way to save a lot of work on refinishing hardware.
Thanks,
Rob

JimM May 12th, 05, 11:25 AM I bought a front sheetmetal hardware kit from d&R, got a bag of bolts, no labelling at all. If anyone has something that shows which bolts sbould go where and could fax or email it, I'd appreciate it a lot.

Check the link I posted, they show to be in bags. I would think this with the AIM would be great for someone who has had their car apart for 20 yrs like me
Cheers,

stope4 May 12th, 05, 06:52 PM JimM, I think I bought the same kit from D&R. I sent it back. It's hard enough trying to piece these things together without having to worry about which bolt goes where. Plus AMK has them bagged and labeled. Of course I didn't go the AMK route either. After being disgusted with D&R for sending me a bag of bolts, I decided to collect bolts from old camaros in bone yards and have them refinished. It took me awile but I was able to collect most of the bolts I needed. The bonus (and not sure of it's importance) was they have the correct markings.
JohnZ May 13th, 05, 05:08 PM I've bought fasteners from AMK for many years - have always been pleased with their products and service. :)

Did you know that I have found different head markings on cars only one month apart? JohnZ probably know more about this and this is more for someone that is anal-retentive like me and some of the Corvette guys but I find it interesting. I'm sure G.M. was ordering from many vendors to keep the bolts in supply.
stope4 May 15th, 05, 09:24 PM Yes X44, baleeeave me, I believe you.
But, I'm with JohnZ on this one. I will never go the original fastener route again unless I took them off the car I was restoring. Although I will admit, I have collected quite a few fasteners from 67, 68 and 69 cars. Probably enough sheetmetal nuts and bolts to do another car if I need to. To this day, when I walk in a salvage yard, if I see decent looking fasteners laying around the car and I recognize the markings, I grab them. The amazing thing is most salvage yard operators just wave you away when you show them the nuts and bolts. It's almost like they don't want to be bothered or they think you're nuts. (probably the latter)

It was standard GM practice in those days to have multiple sources for every fastener, and nobody in the plants paid any attention whatsoever to headmarks - all that mattered was the part number - fasteners were a commodity. Even in our anal and highly-documented NCRS Corvette judging manuals, most fasteners are now described as "commonly observed headmarks include......(several descriptions).." rather than flat statements about only one headmark being correct.
