My clutch is making a sound like when my son sticks one of his plastic McDonalds toys in my desk fan. It only makes the sound in neutral with the clutch pedal out. Press the clutch in the sound goes away and also goes away when the car is in gear and clutch is let out. I don't have clutch slippage problems either. But when I put it in reverse, it backs up a liitle and then I hear a clunking type noise and the there is resistance to it moving backwards. Would a bent finger on a preesure plate do this? Any other Ideas on what could be causing this? I really havent moved it backwards more than a foot after I heard the noise cause I dont want to screw up anything any more than it already is. I plan on looking at the clutch/presssure plate this weekend along with checking my clutch linkage, fork and pivot geometry but if there is something additional I should be checking I am all ears.

Thanks for the help.

Throwout bearing is probably bad.

Once it's apart, it won't hurt to replace the pressure plate and clutch disc too, then you won't have to do it again for 5 years or so.

I had a reverse Idler gear/bearing in the box go bad that acted and sounded like that. You might want to rack the car put it in reverse and listen with a stethiscope where the noise is lowdest. Though out bearing in the bell area or the box. Also how much freeplay is in the top travel of the clutch? Could be only brakes hanging up causing your resistance and a clutch adjust for your noise. last thing is this a new clutch?

Clutch and pressure plate t/o bearing are pretty new (about nine months old but less than 300 miles on them). I have not done the stethescope thing but have thought the noise seems to come more from the back of the tranny than the bellhousing. I didn't install the clutch/ p plate etc., had a mechanic buddy do it for me, (not enough hours in a day) but since the noise started I have been checking things out and it seems that I also have some clutch geometry issues to deal with so I will check those as well. Could I see the reverse Idler gear/bearing if I removed the side cover before I jerk the tranny out? If not its not a big deal as I need to replace my tranny mount as weel as engine mounts.
Hopefully that will take care of some of the clutch linkage geometry issues

Sorry for the ramble
