Hey Gene, thanks for the hookup with Tim. He had the part I needed. The 01A is the build month and week. January first week. The code C016 means nothing to us really, it was used as an internal plant code for Chevrolet cars. Wow, that is alot of 1's. :D

Re; lota 1's.... Does that mean its a early production car??? it has a column shift tilt and some trim ect... trying to decide if its worth finding the last owner and getting title, and going thru it or just part it out..... does need a inner cowl and some floor work... and alot of parts

Gene, rear wheel house vin? Never heard of that one. The only extra vins Ive heard of are under heater suitcase on firewall and under cowl vent, passenger side, visible thru the grill part. If you have ever found Vins somewhere other than these, please tell us about them, pics if possible. :)

Body men find vins in odd places...... there are vins under weld in panels.... for law enforement to verify stolen cars. On both 67 converts and the 68 400 car I have in my shop have vins on the driver's inner wheel house, stamped on the pinch weld ( where the outer/inner wheelhouse are welded together) by the front side of the trunk hinge support. I'll try to remmeber to take a pic or two.

VIN's can't be stamped on the pinchweld since those areas were pretty inaccessible had been freshly painted and had the speckled trunk paint applied by the time the car reached GM's side of the plant, where the VIN's were assigned. Fisher didn't care about GM's VIN's and GM didn't care about Fishers Body numbers, they each meant nothing to the opposite company.

I don't have one on my 69 Norwood convertible anywhere along the pinch weld (on either side of the car) as far forward as I could get , never heard of anyone else with them either. Doesn't seem to be a way to get a gang holder into that area to apply the partial VIN. If GM did do it it would have to be stamped on the inside (trunk side) of the pinch weld as there is definately no way to stamp it from the quarter panel side. Maybe done by a previous owner, dealer, bodyshop? Of course a picture would be nice to see.

Mark,

Many don't know what the VIN derivative looks like. They see 12437 and think thats the VIN when all it is is the model number that was stamped into the sheetl metal by the metal stamping plant. I had a body man here working on a 70 Chevelle who insisted there is a VIN stamped on the trunk lip but all it is, is the model number 13637, nothing more but he will not believe me. When I asked him if that was the VIN, where was the rest of it, he can't explain that. Thats probably what he is seeing.

For those who do not know, the hidden VIN's look like this; 19NXXXXXX for a 69 Camaro.

Had to check mine 67 Norwood RS, there are stamps there but on mine its just the panel date code H 28 2. Both sides have them, but nothing with the VIN. There sure looks like you have more than that on the firebird pictures though.

That's some sort of Fisher Body Stamping Plant-applied number on the Firebird; it was in the raw panel before the wheelhouse was welded to the hinge support. I worked at Lordstown (full-size Chevy and Firebird) in that time period, and Fisher Body had no clue what a body's VIN number would be by the time it got over to Chevrolet for final assembly, nor did they care.
:beers:

I just looked at my 67 Camaro too. It is a sequence of numbers, but definately not the VIN. I side with JohnZ's answer.
