Finally I am painting my 69 Z ( I stuffed it into light pole about 2 years ago at a family wedding.)

Heres the plan finish minor body work on fenders , paint satin black on inner fenders, core support, and all brackets. Paint area under the fender and door hinges orange Edge all surfaces Orange on header panel, fenders, and lower valance. Assemble front end, hang the doors, and align all panels.

Mask off the sufaces that are black and areas that I edged Orange.

Final prime and block sand entire car. When all panels are block sanded and the car is ready to paint I will remove the doors and they will be painted separetly so the jambs are flawless.

Because my car has white stripes the area where the stripe's will be will be painted first. After the white is painted, I will mask off the stripes on the hood and trunk. At this time I will remove the hood and trunk so I will have no tape lines and and the jambs will be flawless.

THATS THE PLAN !!!!

If I am missing anything let me know I am a electrican not a body man.

Sorry about the grammar

I would (and in fact am near completion of) strip the front clip off. Way way easier to do a good job underhood, easier to get the doors off and back on, too.

Guys the best way is to disassemable the front clip and remove the doors & deck lid to get the best overall paint finish without any over spray problems. But The job can be done in another way also, that is to cut in the cars front clip area, paying attention to back taping this will keep over spray problems down to a minor problem. Just remember not to spray heavy on the cut in edges so not to have hard lines. As for the stripes I would go this route which is more work but a better end result. Paint and clear the car wait a day for the clear to set up good and hard, or flash bake it in a booth. sand the hood, cowl and header & trunk and two lip pan. Mask off the rest of the car lay out your stripe package and dry spray the color in making sure not to get heavy on the edges, let it dry for about an hour wet sand the hard lines down but not off, that way you still have a good edge and not a major hoilday. now re-clear the stripes and area sanded. now you have a stripe that can't be felt by running your hand over it, By the way most factory stripes were by nature hard lined on the hood as well as deck lid. Hope this helps.

How would you clear the tulip panel with out reclearing the entire back half of the car?

You can cut it off at the qtr seams on a hard top or blend out the clear with a convert. just remember to learn how to burn in the clear edge before to try it on the car, there are several ways to burn in a edge like stepping the reducer up and thinning the clear down in steps, but the best way is to use a blender such as this, use a bedding clear first that gives you something to burn into PPG makes a 500 I think. Sikkins uses a wet bed clear and a product called SRA which is in fact a super hot and fast dring Reducer. All you have to do is make a soild first pass going light on your burn in edges, then dump the clear out of your gun (Don't clean your gun) Add the SRA and wet burn in the edges, if it looks like you got it to wet, watch it it will darn near fix it's self. If you would like E-mail me and ask as many questions about how to do this type of paint work, been doing it for close to 20 years.
