I recently visited the new General Motors Heritage Museum in Sterling Heights, Michigan. We visited the 80,000 square foot facilitly as part of a Delphi/Saginaw Steering Gear retiree event. I don't know if the public can visit the facility.
They mentioned as part of the tour that they are charged with saving historical information from all the GM Divisions. They can tell you what was on your Cadillac by VIN number, all the way back to 1916. They indicated that they actually have too much information from Oldsmobile. Now the bad news, Chevrolet Motor Division is just the opposite. For instance, they have nothing on Corvettes before Bowling Green began assembly in 1981. They are very doubtful that they will ever uncover any more information. Information on other Chevrolet models is just as limited.
They continually have cars coming in and out of their facility. They have V16 Cadillacs, 60s muscle cars of all GM makes, concept cars, Corvette race cars, the original gas turbine Firebirds, to name a few.
The displays were outstanding. As part of an engine display they have an aluminum ZL-1 engine; an original "porcupine head" 1963 Chevrolet Nascar engine; a turbocharged Corvair engine; and many, many others.
