Does anyone know the correct finish for brake drums? Natural? Painted?

Natural, but after 30 years.. rusted. Use high heat cast blast paint on them (after sandblast of course)

The entire rear axle assembly (including the park brake cables and brake drums) was originally painted semi-gloss black by the axle plant before it was shipped to the assembly plant. :thumbsup:

JohnZ: interesting. I always appreciate your knowledge and information on how things were done then.

On the other hand....IMO, I prefer a more detailed look. Although it may not be "correct", I like the lines to be clean/natural, and also the drums. But I'm really not into the "factory sloppy" look (see sig). Over-restored, sure. But painting everything black just looks like you werent really trying. Kind of like how the factory did things, I guess.

Good thing I dont restore vettes

The brake pipes and flex hose were installed on the axle at the assembly plants, so they weren't painted, but everything else was. :thumbsup:

Just looked over the parking brake cables that came off a mostly unrestored (they had added a couple things for street racing) Z im restoring. No paint on them whatsoever. The rest of the rear end was black.

So was all the drum brake hardware installed, then covered with the drum before painting? This kind of stuff interests me.

Hmmm... I always feel bored while gravity bleeding brakes, now, taking pics of the undercarriage in the meantime is a good idea. Thanks for the hint Jonesy. :D
