I'll be looking for a new tow vehicle soon and was wondering what type vehicle you guys use. What are the likes and dislikes of them? Thanks guys.

I use 2001 4x4 Silverado dually with 8100 gas V-8 and Allison 5/sp auto with 4:10 posi. This one towing rig but only gets 10mpg. Try a Duramax if your into diesels.

We have a 2002 Duramax crewcab short box with the Allison trans. I absolutely love it!! We tow about 6000 miles a summer and we always have to go over the mountains. I had a 6 liter Silverado before and this is a much better tow rig!! It is my daily commuter and I get 15+ mpg. Empty to Portland a couple of weeks ago we got 18 mpg. Towing our car and trailer(7200 lbs) at 70 we get 12mpg. We are taking our Camaro to the Supercar Reunion next August with it (2200 miles each way). Jim

Dodge with the 6BT Cummins, either a 12V or a 24V model. I have 4 of these in my work fleet, and one F&*@ powerjoke diesel (Were in the process of installing a propane kit on our 24V dualie now). I've heard good things about the duramax but i've never ran one. Anything's gotta be an improvement over the GM 6.2 / 6.5's.

We get as much as 19-20 mpg out of our 1995 12V!!

2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with a 5.9 (360). About 10-12 miles per hour (pulling boat & trailer) depending on hills. Shouldn't go over 5,000 pounds on anything being pulled, but plenty enough for car/trailer and my boat/trailer.

No dislikes on it. Comfortable well riding truck.

I have a 97 Dodge 1 Ton Dually with a Cummins. This thing will pull a building and still get between 16 and 18 mpg fully loaded with the A/C on and the cruise control set at 80. Awsome Truck!!! I love it.

Suburban, 1/2 ton, 5.7L gas. It tows what I need it to tow, plus I can haul people as well. Plus it's reasonable for general use.

If I was hauling a ton (or 5) of weight, I'd go with a diesel 1 ton. The only drawback to the suburban is you can't put a gooseneck on it like a pickemup can. However try putting 9 people (or a race team) into your pickup.

It's a tradeoff depending on what you're towing and how you travel. I can camp out inside my suburban. I don't mind being compared to Sanford & Son. I'm sure some of the folks here would tow with a 2002 Pace American Motor home and 30 foot painted to match tag trailer. You're probably somewhere in between that range.

I wouldn't get a big gas engine (for a tow vehicle).

I have a '99 Expedition w/ the Triton V-8. Does a good job w/ decent pulling power. (went w/ the Ford because the Yukon was too much money for too little options. The Expedition is loaded w/ everything and was thousands less.)

I just picked up a 91 SS454 Chevy pickup that I'll be using to tow my car when it's done being restored. I haven't towed with it yet, but the guy told me he had no problem towing 9000 lbs with it. It also runs in the 14's in the quarter mile!

1986 Chevrolet C10 w/ a mostly-stock 350 with a TH350. Still only get 13MPG.

Sticker on door jamb (as well as state registration) says it weighs a little over 3800lbs. That can't be right...

We have a 2001 Chevy crewcab dually with the 8.1L gas and the Allison 5 speed auto. Our trailer is a 42' gooseneck and it weighs in at about 13,000# loaded. It tows like a dream with power to spare. I do admit the gas mileage is about 10 not towing and with the big trailer prob. 6-8mpg. But I don't drive it daily, just to tow and haul. I have had it for 13 months now and not one trip to the doctor!!

Ford 2001 F150 Lightning. Daily driven and always average 15-16mpg., with a best of 19.25mpg empty. This is always 70+mph. with A/C on. Towing 5500lbs. I average 14+mpg.

Keep in mind 380hp. & 450ft.lbs. TQ.
4700lbs. truck weight
0-60mph = 5.2 seconds
Low 13's 1/4 mile
142mph. top speed
.88 G's on a skidpad stock

Who cares if it doesn't have a blue bowtie??

I'm talking about gettin down the road & capable towing also.

Show me (for any amount of money)what the General has to offer that can compete with the "L", in all of these same fields?????

Flame away!!!!!!

I also have a 1968 Chevy C50 Towtruck that has towed as much as 24,000lbs. 5-6mpg, but will tow almost anything. The 24,000lbs was an '89 GMC ex.cab 1 ton dually towing a Teton 3 axle 40' 5th. wheel travel trailer. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif The towtruck weighs 13,000lbs.

I own both Fords & Corvairs, and even a Camaro. The Fords & Corvair run & drive. The Camaro does not.

96 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton extended cab with 5.9L. Engine still going strong, but tranny started slipping at 70k miles and since rebuilt it. About half those miles were towing a 5th wheel, 20' Ski Nautique, and a few Camaro tows. It handles excellent with something in tow. You don't want to hit anything with the front end though, there is little structural support up front in this vintage of Ram.

Just picked up my NEW 2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew yesterday. Has the 5.4L and tow package. Will find out how good it is when spring gets here to tow the boat.

I used to tow a 15000lb trailer and used a F250 with PS diesel. What a torque monster. The ride without a trailer was horrible, but they fixed that with the 2000 model. I now use a c2500 with a 6.0. Does great for hauling the Camaros around. I got rid of the big RV. My choice today would be a c2500 with the duramax. The size engine would depend on the load. Any GM diesel before the duramax should be avoided at all cost. IMHO.
