Reason I ask, we bought our third refrigerator last week. We went ot Sears 25 months ago and Wife had to have the Kenmore Trio Elite, built by Maytag.

Nice looking and all, but #1 died in three months. Sears brings out another Trio. #2 lasted 22 months, same problem, compressor froze.

Sears gave 70% betterment on a new Amana frig. Amana has always made good appliances. Our last, and still have Amana frig, 16 yrs old, is still keeping the beverages cold in the garage.

Got new Amana frig home, opened the door, and there it is on the tag, MAYTAG.

I hope Maytag left Amana Appliance engineers alone...........I hate to see this happen again.........

It appears that Maytag acuired Amana Refrigeration in the fall of 2001. Maytag's refrigerators were made by Admiral/ Magic Chef which were not very good. Hopefully Maytag just owns the brand and the Refrigerators are still built in Amana Iowa. The Amana refrigerator's are excellent. 10 years ago, the Amana washer's and dryers were built by Speed Queen. Dishwashers by GE etc. Now I don't know.

Maytag was just bought.

Here is an excerpt from a recent WSJ article:
Faced with larger rivals employing cheaper labor overseas, Maytag agreed to go private last week in a $1.13 billion deal. The buyer: Ripplewood Holdings LLC, a New York private-equity firm. Maytag has warned the United Auto Workers union, which represents many production workers here, that if the two can't find ways to cut costs fast, doom could await the Newton factory. Roughly 12% of Maytag's production comes from low-cost labor overseas, a much smaller proportion than that of U.S. rivals including appliance-industry leader Whirlpool Corp.
