I bought a Wells VR 715 a couple of years ago and it was silver in color and tall. I went back to Autozone today to buy another one, same part number, but it is now shorter in height and the cover is black instead of silver. Any idea what the difference is internally or is it the same guts.

I bought a Wells replacement regulator a few weeks ago. it was a shorty, too.The base is almost identical to the Delco-Remy original, except that the noise supressor plugs in at 90* rather than 45*. I pulled the cover off to replace it with my original Delco cover. Inside is a little circuit board!!! a major improvement over the mechanical one it replaced.

BTW, the originals were Black with silver cad base.
