View Full Version : Help my dad pick a cam!
Here is the combo!
350cid
8.5 to 1's
76 cc heads(stock)
1 5/8" block huggers
2.5" dual exhaust
Performer intake
600cfm carb
700r4 tranny
3.90 gears
2000 stall converter
26" rear tires
This is in a 75 280Z and weights in at 2700lbs. Here is the cams we are currently looking at.....
Comp 268 High energy...268/268...218/218...454/454 lift
Comp 268 extreme....268/280....224/230....477/480 lift
Comp Magnum 270....270/270...224/224....470/470 lift
He is looking for a mild rough idle and good street manners with this current combo. Car has a Fastburn 385 in it right now but is coming out for a later street rod project.
tommyg Jun 7th, 05, 10:34 AM I would go with the 268 extreme.
6D9 How do you like you 408 build. I am just finishing a 406 with AFR's 10.8:1, RPM Air gap, hooke 1 3/4 header, dr gas x pipe 3.73 rear, 4 spd. My builder say it will feel like a beefed up big block - this true?
Greg O Jun 7th, 05, 12:10 PM Before I even saw the ones you were looking at I was thinking the 268 High Energy would be a great one. That one will do you well, or if you like the Extreme line, back it down a size or 2. I wouldn't go out of the 2-teens on duration and over .46x lift with stock springs and low compression.
greg moreira Jun 7th, 05, 01:24 PM Id be going smaller....no bigger than the 262. The XE 268 is a fiarly hot street cam, but when you couple that with only 8.5:1 compression, its not going to be the best performer. It will have nice midrange into the mid/high rpm range(probably roughly 5200-5400rpm), but low end will be a bit iffy with the compression. That will make for slighly sloppy cruising manners. The 262 camshaft would bump up low and mid range, and considering that your working with stock heads, horsepower production will not be much different as far as peak numbers go cause the stock heads wont move enough air to really let the 268 shine. You need more of a converter to run the 268 cam. Comp says it can be used with a stock converter, but realistically thats pushing it. Also, considering that a 2000rpm converter is really just a shade larger than stock, and torque will be down...especially with the lower compression, that converter youve to will most likely barely be any different than stock. Id actually use a lunati voodoo 262 camshaft. The voodoo cams are basically refined extreme energy camshafts. Lunatis cam grinder who developed these cams(harold brookshire), has done great things with the voodoo camshafts. They have aggressive ramps like a comp and more average area under the lift curve(translates to more power), however the closing ramp is softer. That makes for a quieter and longer lived valvetrain. Harold Brookshire was the man at ultradyne and also at comp cams for a while. He designed the high energy cams, but was gone before the XE cams. However, if you like the comp cams XE design, he has taken the modern approach that you see in the XE cams and has made it better with the voodoo camshafts. So far, there is a much smaller percentage of cam failures during break in as well compared to the XE cams.

260 to 264 or so...

camgrinder Jun 7th, 05, 10:00 PM IF your dad really wants the lumpy idle the 270 Magnum would be my choice. I would choose a 112 lobe center if available. Can you get the 268 extreme as a single pattern cam?
I think with the low 1st gear trans and 3.90 rear gears the car will drive fine. And even if the torque convertor clutch is locked up at freeway speeds, the engine will be above 2000 rpms with the 3.90-1 gears and 26" tires.
Also, building a low compression engine can be like an engine at high alltitude, the lack of cylinder pressure can be helped with a smaller exhaust lobe. Maybe a 270/262 combo? The later opening exhaust valve can lengthen the power stroke, hopefully increasing low speed torque...
If your going to choose a cam that will give the most torque and best driveablity, Gregs choice of the 262 cam would be it. But the idle will be more like a late model Camaro than an old hot rod.
greg moreira Jun 7th, 05, 10:49 PM Actually, that lunati 262 cam has a nice muscle car idle to it. With 219/227 duration at .050 and only 8.5:1 compression, it will lope nicely.
I would go with the 268 extreme.

Tommy, I have not got to drive the car much but when I did I could not beleive the power. Sucker would flat out rip the tires off! The car is currently getting ready for paint jail.
I also forgot to add that he will be installing new matching valve springs as well. Thanks for the input on the cams! I will relay the info to him.
