View Full Version : solid flappet sound clip 1bad69+70 Jun 8th, 05, 01:28 PM Anybody got one.Small or big block. 1bad69+70 Jun 8th, 05, 01:29 PM I meant flat tappet. Eric68 Jun 8th, 05, 04:03 PM Just curious what you expect to sound different with a solid FT cam? You wouldn't normally hear any difference between a hyd and solid FT cam with the hood closed . . . Now if your hood is open some of the older "wide lash" cams (like the 30-30 cam) will have a bit of a sewing machine sound to them -- some newer tight lash solid cams you can't hear at all. My street roller doesn't sound any different at all unless you listen real close. My point is just that its going to be difficult to find someone with a sound clip that sounds any different than a hyd cam . . . Good luck though, and I'm interested in seeing . . . errr hearing . . . what may get posted. camaroman7d Jun 8th, 05, 04:27 PM I was thinking the same thing as Eric. You won't here any difference. The difference is so slight that unless you had some serious recording (for the clip) and audio on your computer I don't think you would be able to tell the difference. Loosen up your hyd. cammed cars rockers very slightly and you will hear the same sound. mmcillece Jun 8th, 05, 04:30 PM I have one in my 357 S/B and can't hear the lifters, we do have a quiet gear drive in though. Go to the Engine forum and see the vid or our 357, it has open headers, but you should get the idea. Zman1 Jun 9th, 05, 12:46 AM I don't know....My Z-70 Isky solid makes a lot of racket w/.028 lash! 548/548 3.04 adv. 2.64@.050 108lsa Hood closed or not, you can deffinitely tell it's a solid lifter motor. Sorry..no sound clip. Yellow68SS Jun 9th, 05, 09:55 AM Ya my solid flat tappet is pretty loud and very easy to distinguish. I like the sound but people who dont know about solids have asked me why my engine is ticking. The thing i don't like is it is harder to tell what ticking is "normal" and what isn't, like an ezaust leak or something. Sorry i dont have a sound clip either, hopefully someone can help ya out Eric68 Jun 9th, 05, 01:39 PM Ya'll need to get in thar and adjust them valves ;) or maybe your exhaust is too quiet . . . LOL Yellow68SS Jun 9th, 05, 03:50 PM Eric68 What lash is your solid at? mine runs at .025 hot and about .019 cold. It is quiter when its cold but thats not how it stays very long. Maybe its not as loud as i think... i am the only one i know that runs a solid here and cant listen to another car. I have had 3 solids and the first one was run at .014 and it was the quietest but the last two were .025-.028 and were kinda loud. I check the lash about every 2 months driving it about twice a week and it has only changed once and about .002. Maybe i don't have a loud enough exaust, time for open headers, that will get rid of the lifter noise!! LOL Eric68 Jun 9th, 05, 04:29 PM Yeah, just uncork that puppy and you'll never hear those lifters again . . . LOL My street roller is .014/.016" hot, so its a tight lash type. I have also run a couple of the Comp Magnum cams from .018 - .022" and they were just as quiet as my roller . . . I've played with a couple engines with the 30-30 in them and they do sing a little more, but they still weren't that loud IMO. I suppose everyone's ears and opinions are different -- sound is a subjective thing. camaroman7d Jun 9th, 05, 06:05 PM I run my flat tappet solid at .012/.014 cold. I don't really hear any noise but, then again my car is/was loud. |
