Anyone have any good ideas about how to clean up and refinish aluminum wheels?

The finish on my wheels has come off in places and allowed some corrosion of the aluminum to begin. I'd like to strip them clean, polish out any rough spots from the corrosion and nicks, etc., and either polish them brightly (they're currently kind of a satiny machined finish) or chrome plate them. Does chrome plating on aluminum stand up o.k.?

They're Conquest TSi wheels, and not easy to replace, and, other than a couple small spots of corrosion, are in pretty good shape. I'd rather recondition what I've got, than go looking for replacements.

Any thoughts? Any recommended approaches?

You can either send them out, pricey, or do them yourself which is what I'm going to do. I just used POR15 Glisten PC clearcoat on a new gas tank and am very pleased with the results. No brush marks, flowed out well. Their stripper will remove the clearcoat, then polish, prep with their AP-120 and apply the clear.

Thanks for the advice, Rick. Anyone have any input on the chroming idea? Positives? Negatives?
