: Replaced Leaf Springs, Still Uneven Ride Height
jogasz28 Jun 12th, 05, 04:59 AM Yesterday I replaced both leaf springs with the 4 leaf Z28 springs. Used a new mounting kit including shackles, rubbers, U-bolts.
I left the shackle bolts loose, set the car back on 4 wheels, rocked it several times, and now the driver side tire is even CLOSER to the wheel well.
I haven't tightened them yet and taken it for a ride, but I think I know what the result willl be.
I do have frame rail connectors, could those be causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated by my driver side tire and me.
dawg Jun 12th, 05, 05:23 AM hmmm i seen this situation before.
was the car ever involved in an accident?
reason im asking is that ive seen some twisted frames cause this.
might be a good idea to have car put on a frame machine to check it.

I sure hope not. But you never know.
Anyone know a trustworthy frame shop near Cleveland Ohio?
Mark C Jun 12th, 05, 06:55 AM 69's are famous for having one side lower than the other. My drivers side is about 1/2" lower than the passenger side. It's not the rear springs that cause this, but more than likely the front springs. Either the passenger side spring is not correctly seated in the spring pocket or the drivers side has weakened over time more than the passenger side. Check the height of your front end on either side, I think you'll find the passenger side is slightly higher which of course puts more weight on the drivers side rear.

New front springs are next on the menu anyways. I'll see if that makes the difference.
Thanks.
sicsD8 Jun 14th, 05, 09:05 AM The front swaybar can also cause uneven ride height in the rear. Unhook both links and see if it evens out. If so, trim or shim one link to level it out.
DjD Jun 14th, 05, 10:02 AM Body/subframe bushings can effect a lean as well... I'd also compare the spring perches and make sure you have everything the same and that the pin is in the hole on both sides. You can even set the car on the ground with the lower shock attachment points disconnected to see if the shocks are the problem. Did you have this problem with the old springs?
6D9 Jun 14th, 05, 10:26 AM Mine is the same way..new springs front and rear. Still low on the drivers side. It drives me nuts....

Just for kicks, unhook the swaybar and let me know if it helps. I couldn't figure mine out either until someone gave me this info.

I'll try it this weekend.
Thanks,
Flynn69 Jul 5th, 05, 06:29 PM My 68 had new multi leaf springs installed. Lower on the drivers side. I was thinking of putting a shim on top of the shock tower.
What are we talking about. Unhook the front sway bar. If this solves the problem, how do you adjust the sway bar.

KansasJoe Jul 5th, 05, 07:28 PM Most common causes of lean:
-Didn't replace front coil springs - consistent weight of driver(not always passenger in vehicle takes toll after 15+years)
-tightened the shackle nuts before you let the weight of vehicle down (very common)
-springs aren't arched evenly (switch driver and passenger springs)
-didn't replace axle pad insulators and one side is worn more than the other
-didn't get the vehicle centered correctly and one side is where it's supposed to be and the other side is actually hitting on axle pad
-sway bar or trac bar holding one side higher
-shocks (but doubt it)
-check tire pressure (don't laugh, happens a lot)
If all of these are correct or have been replaced then take off the low side and take to spring shop and have it arched up to match (shouldn't cost more than 20-30 bucks) or shim the high side to match the low side
BlackoutSteve Jul 6th, 05, 12:55 AM Perhaps you could isolate the rear (and front) suspension and it's components buy placing the car on jack stands. -Support the car on the chassis rails of course!
Make sure the ground is level and that the jack stands (front and rear pairs) are the same height as each other.
If the car is still uneven, it's likely to be your subframe or unibody or both.
Expect "some" flexing of the body.
davidpozzi Jul 6th, 05, 01:45 PM Steve's suggestion is a good one. Put a narrow piece of wood or steel on your floor jack pad and jack on the exact center of the front subframe centerline. The piece wood or steel should be running parallel front to rear to the centerline of the car. Raise the car until the tires are off the floor, this will eliminate the front suspension from affecting body lean. You can then switch to the rear and jack that end and see if there is a difference.
You can disconnect any sway bars to take them out of the picture, just unhook one end link.

edd Gordon Jul 6th, 05, 01:48 PM Got to agree with KansasJoe go thru his list - A few years ago I put new springs in one of my Camaros and it was lower on right side I switched the springs and it came out right on the money. One other time I had to have both springs rearched to match by a spring shop that did alot of trucks and they did it for me in about less then two hours while I waited. Front Sway bar I had one on my Trans am years ago that must have been twisted and replaced with another used one and it leveled the car off nice.
