View Full Version : Changing points to electronic ignition converter
stevea Jun 12th, 05, 03:21 PM Has anyone changed their original points out on their distributor for an electonic ignition converter.
From what I am told you can just take out the old points and place the electronic ignition in with a couple of wires to hook up. I want to keep the motor looking as original as possible being that it is an all stock 67 SS.
Thanks for your input.
Steve
JohnZ Jun 12th, 05, 06:01 PM There are lots of conversions out there (Pertronix, Crane, Breakerless SE, etc.); none are "electronic ignition", none add any spark energy. They just replace the electromechanical switch for the coil (the points) with an electronic switch. If you install one, be sure and carry a spare point set and condenser with you - when they die without warning in the middle of nowhere, none of them are sold in retail stores.
:beers:
Joe Harrison Jun 12th, 05, 06:02 PM I have the old pertronix and it works great. Has never missed a beat in 10 years. Tokk me about 1 hour to put in from start to shiming to backin and running.

Z10Joey Jun 12th, 05, 06:59 PM I have a one wire Breakerless SE in my Z10 (can't tell it's there, well now everybody knows! :) ). Also, I have a 2 wire Petronix in my 69 Chevelle SS. The 2 wires show so it won't look 100% stock. If it doesn't need to look 100% stock, the Petronix (2 wire) is about half the price of the Breakerless SE. Both are easy to install and I would recommend removing the distributor to install it. I believe both instructions say removal is not necessary (I guess they don't have a bad back).
Both have worked well.
stevea Jun 12th, 05, 11:04 PM Has anyone uses a Mallory or MSD set up. A friend told me he was partial to MSD, but I'm not sure. I don't mind spending a little more money for a better part, but if it isn't any better I will go with a less expensive one. This isn't going to be a show car, so I don't mind if a couple wires stick out, if I ever sell it it would be an easy fix to put it back to original. Thanks for your input guys,
Steve
squid Jun 13th, 05, 07:33 AM Went through two Pertronix Ignitor II, back to points for the last year and no problems. Better start-up with electronic. Best electrical upgrade was the MAD Enterpises re-wiring.
Eric Kammerer Jun 13th, 05, 09:06 AM After bad experiences with MSD components in the GM HEI on the 68, and the general bad press that the Pertronix units get (Crane seems to be better), I am going with a small body HEI from Dave Ray ( www.davessmallbodyheis ). The conversion uses over the counter parts, which is why I like it. I'll attach a couple of photos Dave sent me, because I haven't taken any pictures of my unit yet.

It's trick yet simple, and with the module underneath and at the rear, it'll be pretty hard to tell it from stock. Cheap too, at $175. If the dist in your SS is original, you may consider going to the boneyard to get a core to convert.
Eric,
Have you been in contact with Dave recently about the distributor?
I tried to contact him a while back about getting one of his distributors but never got an answer, so wasn't sure he was still around?
Thanks,
Bill C.
Eric Kammerer Jun 13th, 05, 11:06 AM Bill -
He's around but hard to catch. I sent him my dist at the beginning of may and got it back at the end.
It takes him a while to answer email, and the phone has a generic, female message so you're not even sure you have the right number, but he's there.
If this dist runs as good as it looks, it is a great deal!
Procurement_man Jun 14th, 05, 06:39 AM I have the crane XRi in mine no problems in the first year... cheep and easy to install. You don't even have to take out the dist... and works with your stock resistor wire... Good luck.
Eric,
Can you tell me what he charged you to do the conversion?
If you want to send a PM, send it to ssati2d@yahoo.com
Also, I'd like to hear how it works and how you like it.
Thaks,
Bill C.
