View Full Version : Header recommendations for a ZZ502 in a 68
Meanchicken Jun 16th, 05, 12:01 AM Any header recommendations for a ZZ502 in a 68 Camaro?
I want 2" tubes, ceramic coated and need to clear a Buick GNX Power Steering box. The front is lowered about 2" on GW tubulars with QA1 coil overs. The rest of my exhaust system will be 3"
I also want to max my HP and TQ.
Thanks!
Tim

onovakind67 Jun 20th, 05, 10:09 PM If you want to maximize your torque and horsepower, use a smaller header. Headerdesign recommended a 1.68" x 36" primary tube with a 2.66" x 14" collector for a zz502 crate motor. You can get a copy of Larry Meaux's Pipemax-Pro for about $20 to give you a real fine set of design parameters. His program will come up with a longer set of primaries than Headerdesign, with a slightly larger collector because it's designing a set of race headers.
tobin67 Jul 31st, 05, 03:50 PM I put 2" Hooker's on mine.
Meanchicken Jul 31st, 05, 11:43 PM Hey Tobin67.
What Hooker PN did you use?
After being on backorder for nearly 2 months, my ZZ502 will finally show up this week, so I'll finally start ordering parts to install and the headers will be first on the list.
Did you do any upgrades to the engine before you installed it (cam, springs, etc.), or did you install it out of the box after installing the correct oil pan?
How do you like it?
I appreciate your response!
Tim
tobin67 Aug 1st, 05, 05:12 PM The headers were Hooker part no H002205-1 BBC. You will need to make small adjustments on three tubes on the driver side to fit. They will accommodate the clutch just fine.
I went with the Milodon oil pan.
We are hoping to crank the engine in a few days. This is one of many projects. While the old engine was out, we took advantage of the space to make many replacements, fixes, etc. We are leaving the 502 stock. I am sure that the measly 502 horses will "bore" me at some point and I will add, add, add. But right now, I am anxious to drive the ZZ502. I went with the carbed 502 too.
stmay Aug 1st, 05, 06:58 PM I just put a set of Patriot ceramic semi-shorties on my 454. I think the tubes are 1-3/4". The fit great and allow for lowered front ends. Summit has them for around $310.
Meanchicken Aug 1st, 05, 09:11 PM Tobin67,
How did you mount your clutch ball? Did you drill and tap the boss, or did you use one of those Scoggins Dickey clutch ball brackets?
I'm familiar with needing to ding the #3 tube to clear the power steering box. What did you have to do the the other two tubes?
Any difficulties swapping the oil pick up when you swapped on the Milodon pan?
stmay,
Did your patriots fit without having to ding them up to clear stuff on the driver side?
Thanks!
Tim
tobin67 Aug 2nd, 05, 04:22 AM We tapped the block for the clutch.
We used different hose fittings for the power steering for clearance.
There isnt a lot of major work, but it does require a little shoe-horning to fit it in.
The pickup and pan went fine.
I hope to post some pictures soon.
tobin67 Aug 3rd, 05, 06:37 PM I finally have a website with some pics. Some of the shots show how we worked the 502 into the '67.
All the credit goes to Lance Carter and Jake at Carter Chassis in McDonough, Georgia. Awesome guys and even better mechanics!

Beautiful Camaro, brother!
I'm still slobering.
If you don't mind me saying, it looks like in the new wheels shot, the stance in the rear is a little high. Did you lower it down onto the wheels yet?
That's the first I've seen needing to ding a header tube to clear clutch linkage too. Are you using the big block Z-bar?
What fuel pump and regulator did you use?
Tim
tobin67 Aug 4th, 05, 06:31 PM Thanks!
That wheels picture was taken right after the new leaf springs were installed. Had mono went with 5 leaf. Since then it has dropped a bit. We will wait a bit to see if it settles anymore before adjusting. No air shocks either. May have to lower the front end too. That 502 is a lot lighter than the 454. That pic is with the 454.
My headers needed three minor "adjustments". We also went with different power steering connectors to clear the headers.
I will ask about the fuel pump and regulator.
tobin67 Aug 8th, 05, 04:32 AM We used a 12-802-1 holley blue pump and 12-803 regulator. We did use the big block z-bar.
