View Full Version : Pypes Exhaust and Mufflers
68driver Jun 17th, 05, 07:53 AM I'm looking at the new 2.5" Pypes X-flow system with transverse muffler for my 68 convertible. Here's the link... http://pypesexhaust.com/newproducts.html#10
I need some input on muffler selection. Anyone familiar with their "Street Pro" or "Maxi-Mizer" mufflers? Their web site shows the Street Pro with a loudness factor of "7", and the Maxi-Mizer is listed as "6", but not sure how these compare to other products out there. Anyone know how these compare to the Flowmaster 40s or American Thunder series? (I've heard several convertible owners say both of these products are too loud for daily cruising in a 'vert.)
I want a nice, deep exhaust note without being too loud. I'm running a 383 with a mild cam and Thorley tri-Y headers. Suggestions?
- Thanks
Ccass Jun 19th, 05, 10:11 PM fyi, The Pypes transverse system is the only one that there are no additional muffler choices. It is only available with the Race Pro design muffler. There are plenty of transverse systems available, but none with a straight through design muffler. So that is the nitch we are filling with this system. The Race Pro happens to be one of the quieter mufflers Pypes offers despite its straight thru design. Like most straight thru mufflers, it is rather tame at idle and cruising speeds but really roars at WOT.

Thanks for the reply. I might order a system this week to take advantage of the "special" pricing and free shipping. I'll call the customer service number tomorrow for more info. (I think you work for Pypes... right?)
The Pypes web site lists the "Race Pro" at a sound factor of "7". Any idea how this compares to the dB level of a Flowmaster 40 series? A high flow muffler would be great, but I don't want anything that's going to rattle my head cruising down the highway.
The site also mentions that low end torque may suffer in lower HP applications. I'm running a 383 stroker with 399HP / 455 torque. Mostly for daily driving and boulevard cruising. What do you think?

Chris , I'd also like to know how the sound compares to the Flowmaster among the other questions 68driver asked.
CamarosRus Apr 13th, 07, 06:04 PM I am still asking for someone to send me or show pics here of PYPES transverse system on 1st Gen Camaro............using the Stainless Tailpipe extensions........
Thanks,
Brentmc Apr 14th, 07, 08:53 PM Chris more than just "works" for Pypes...I believe he founded it (right?)
I see him at Carlisle 2x a year--it seems he spends most of his time in the Performance Years booth.

67camaro02 Apr 16th, 07, 04:21 PM Ok i just put switched from flowmasters to the Pypes street pros. They sounded pretty similar to my flowmaster original 40s at idle. I took the flowmasters off cause they were annoyingly loud and had a ton of droning inside the car. The pypes are definately quieter while cruising and under acceleration but not to quiet. Overall i like them a lot, they have a real nice tone to them.

Thanks,We just uploaded a 67 Firebird install with the tailpipe extensions.

Pypes have three distinctly different muffler designs that yield very different sounds. The crossflow muffler sound and design was changed since this older topic reply I made. The crossflow muffler is now MUCH more subdued in comparison to the Flowmaster crossflow. The Pypes crossflow system also flows much better because of its unique design.
