I am installing a VDO temperature gauge and the instructions say to put the sender in the block not the head. I thought most senders were in the head and I will have to get a different size sender to put it in the block. Is it really a problem to mount it in the head?

The only place on the block that I can figure would work is one of the lower drain holes, just above the pan rail. No way would I put a sender there, too much rust and crud collects down there.
I have mine in the heads, idiot lite on one side, guage on the other.
Some, including some factory guage installations, put the guage sender in the intake manifold, by the thermostat.
In the head will give a higher reading, but you get used to what is "normal" for your motor.

The VDO instructions are "generic" - there's no place to put a sending unit in a Chevy block. Put it in the head or the intake, whichever works best for you; makes no difference.

I went with the intake manifold. The instructions warned about putting it in the head because the manifold heat would effect it. I am not going to put it in the block drain and it would not fit anyway. The manifold had a convenient hole the right size.

I too had a temp problem I was sorting out, my 69` had an after market gauge in it, I did not trust, put a VDO on the intake port, after a few months, I swapped sender locations, there was a 10 degrees differance between head and manifold, and the gauge I didnot trust was right!
