: RS headlight relay upgrade, but not working right
Eighttrakz Jun 18th, 05, 06:12 PM Is there a different schematic for doing the brighter headlight relay upgrade for RS camaros and SS camaros? I installed a relay each for the high and low beams of my RS, but something is goofy. Now the ignition switch turns on my headlights when I turn the key, the light switch will open my headlight doors but not close them, and my dimmer switch turns the lights off when I push it. I have gone over the schematic and can't find anything I did that would be hooked up wrong. If I unhook the relays and connect it back the way it was originally, it works normally again. I bought the relays myself, this was not a purchased kit. Does anyone know what's going on with everything being wacky when I hook up the relays?
dnult Jun 19th, 05, 09:46 AM I sounds like it's hooked up incorrectly. I know that sounds sarcastic, but something isn't right. I don't know specifics about your kit, but here is how it should work.
There should be two terminals on the relay that control the coil. You can identify the coil leads with an ohm meter. They are the only terminal pair that will show resistance (like 20 or 30 ohms I'm guessing). One terminal of the relay coil should be grounded and the other should be connected to the appropriate headlamp lead from the harness (high or low beam). When you operate the switch and dimmer, you should hear your relays click.
What other terminals you have on your relay depends on the type. Most have three other terminals. One is the wiper which should have power applied to it. The other two are labeled N.O. for normally open and N.C. for normally closed. You should have fused power applied to the wiper contact and the appropriate headlight filiment line connected to the N.O. contact.
Eighttrakz Jun 19th, 05, 12:35 PM I don't see what could be wrong with it. I hooked it up according to the schematic here, which looks just like the relays I have.

I have been trying other ways of hooking up the terminals to the relays but it still does not work right.
68rs406 Jun 20th, 05, 12:05 AM without looking at a factory wiring diagram, i cant tell you witch wires you need from the light switch, but you likely have the wrong wires supplying terminal #86, or the "hot" side of the control coil, the part that "turns on the switch" in the relay, if you will. it sounds to me like the wires you have on #86 is the supply to the switch, not the downstream side of the circuit, or the part that turns your lights on.
i'd have too look at the circuit to explain it better, but if they come on at all, its probably close, except for the trigger wire (terminal #86). just curious, how well do you know electrical circuitry? you should be able to find the wires you need with a test light, by turning on and off the lights, and so on.
also, one other thing i just thought of, you are not on terminal #87A of your relay are you? thats a normally closed contact, and could cause similar issues. basically on #87A it would come on and stay on with ignition power, then go off when you supply power to terminal #86, like when you hit the dimmer with yours. do you follow me? hope i'm not confusing you with this, but in short, there is a wrong connection (i know, obviously), the way the diagram shows will work.
good luck with it, you'll get it.
Eighttrakz Jun 25th, 05, 11:36 PM I have my wires coming from the switch hooked up to the #86 terminal, and i'm not using terminal 87A . I am absolutely stumped with this one. I know i'm on the right wires because i've traced it and the colors are correct. I might just have to give up on this thing because i'm about burned out on this one.
Loflyng Jun 30th, 05, 07:37 PM If your car is a 67 the motor relays that close the headlight doors use the headlamps as there ground path. The relays you added would basicly be in series with 2 of the motor relays. The new relays operate on a low enough voltage that they are being activated while the motor relays are not.
Eighttrakz Jul 2nd, 05, 11:10 PM It is a 67. I guess that means I cannot do the relay upgrade then. I'm glad that I know why it didn't work, at least.
bbcamp2 Jul 3rd, 05, 10:39 AM You can still do the upgrade, just use the wire feeding the head lights to trigger the relays. Put the new relays between the RS relays and the head lights. That way, the old RS wiring thinks that the relays are the head lights.
Don't give up, this upgrade is well worth the trouble!
