I was looking at the manual set up any pluses or minus to any of them? Thanks Pauly shanekennedy Jun 21st, 05, 06:24 AM i bought a kit from unisteer on a group purchase from another forum. haven't got around to installing it yet though. cool thing is it is all bolt-on, no cutting/welding. you can download the installation instructions from their web site under the support heading. novaderrik Jun 21st, 05, 11:32 AM i wonder if any of those companaies has come up with a kit that gets rid of the bumpsteer? personally, i'd save the money and get a good tight ratio box and moog tie rods and what not. if you are after the weight loss, then you can get the aluminum manual box that Flaming River makes and find other less crucial places to save a few pounds. if you are after the "cool factor", then i'm betting you don't care how screwed up your steering is and nothing will sway you away from a rack and pinion system. trex70 Jun 24th, 05, 09:18 PM O.K, I just put in the unisteer manual rack kit today. AS for being s straight foward process, I would say not. I also had to dimple my header a little bit. I have not driven it yet, still have to align it. I work for firestone, so it is up there..I will align in the morning. I think I have about 6 hours in it. the only hard part is getting the geometry correct. I did turn the steering wheel and it is 100000000000000000000000000000% better. I would recommend it. As for bump steer, the say there will be none. I will drive it tomorrow night after work. trex70 Jun 24th, 05, 09:20 PM Oh, yeah, you do have to cut...the lower rod has to be cut to align correctly...I took about 1.5" off. every car is different depending on headers. I run Headmon. novaderrik Jun 24th, 05, 10:50 PM lower rod? which lower rod? trex70 Jun 25th, 05, 04:57 PM steering rod has to be cut. I drove it today...it was worth the headache...great steering novaderrik Jun 25th, 05, 05:11 PM steering shaft? trex70 Jun 25th, 05, 05:22 PM yes jackalope Jun 25th, 05, 11:42 PM Im wondering the same thing, though for my application i would need a power rack. What i have collected is that steeroids is absolute crap. i havent heard anything about the manual unisteer rack before now however there was a group purchase over at pro-touring.com and a few people had binding issues with the u jopints (they had to add another u joint. Has anyone here done the brp rack conversion, it uses the rack from a 98-02 camaro and converts the first gen to front steer, it involves a huge ammount of cutting and welding on the crossmember http://www.brphotrods.com/parts.html look closely at the picture ta the top. Has anyone used the power unisteer rack and pinion kit, right now thats what im leaning towards, but want to get some more insight into it. also trex what took the time i was under the oimpression it was just a matter of taking out the lower control arm bolts replacing them with those supplied in the kit, hooking up the steering shaft and tie rods to steering arms and thos eto the spindles... trex70 Jun 26th, 05, 06:15 PM Yes, me too. I was trying to do it while working. The biggest problem was just getting the geometry right. My headers cause so much interfence problem. I still used what they sent, but just had to dimple the header. Also, I found the instructions very incomplete. I hate to say it, but I need pictures!! Stll though, I do love it. If I had to do it again...I think I could do it in about 2 hours. morrisclassic Jun 26th, 05, 07:03 PM I put a 92 IROC steering box with performance suspension on my 69. Eliminates all the head aches and still has great road feel. An adapter is needed for the steering coupler. If you want more details let me know. Drives great with a lot less problems. Billy MStennes Jun 27th, 05, 08:08 AM Mine (Unisteer) had been on for about a month now. The instalation was straight forward and not to bad. I'm running Hooker Super Copms so I had to install another u-joint on the steering shaft. It took me longer to get the steering shaft setup than anything else. It steers sooooooooooo nice and prescise. I'm planning on redoing my steering shaft this winter just so all the joints match better. 2 poilished and 1 painted looks kinda cheesy. But I'm driving it. I also had some problems getting the power steering hose hooked up tight as it is a real tight fit. My advice is to get all that tight than tighten the rack up. 1st rate setup though and I would reccomend it. Silver69Camaro Jul 1st, 05, 04:12 PM How do they get rid of the bump steer? Do you have to change the spindle/tie rod hookup? |
