View Full Version : Rear Speaker Option Available in '67 Convertibles?
SFCamaro Jun 22nd, 05, 11:47 PM Was the rear speaker option available as a factory option for '67 Convertibles? If so, where was the speaker mounted? I'm looking at a '67 RS/SS Convertible that has an option code for rear speaker, but I don't see where it would have been mounted? There's no rear shelf in a convertible!

JimM Jun 23rd, 05, 05:37 AM The "factory" rear speaker option was 2 cardboard boxes that screw to the trunk floor, under where the ragtop folds down.
SFCamaro Oct 25th, 05, 12:34 AM Are these rear speaker boxes available as reproductions? Or do I have to locate an original pair? Geez, how could you hear the sound with the top folded down over the speakers?

67rsssvert Oct 25th, 05, 07:34 AM I saw the boxes in the Classic Industries catalog (I'm sure Rick's and others have them as well) - I've been looking for speaker mounting options for the 'vert for awhile. And, yes, from what I hear from others with the top down the sound is muffled.
Gr33n Oct 25th, 05, 08:36 AM Steve,
My 67 convert came with the speaker option, they are still in the car. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Pgreen/MVC-004S.JPG

SFCamaro Oct 25th, 05, 09:45 AM Wow. So the speakers are facing the back of the rear seat? What were they thinking? Mine has a rear folddown seat though, so I guess I'd be ok as long as my seat was down. What size were the original speakers? 6x9's?

Mark C Oct 25th, 05, 10:06 AM No, the speakers face into the well, the magnets are up against the back of the seat. Originals are 6" by 9" 10 ohm speakers but they are very shallow so the magnets won't stick to the seat support. If you try to use bigger (deeper) speakers they will end up stuck to your seat support. And no you can't hear them very well with the top down, but it's actually pretty nice with the top up, they are much better than just a single dash speaker.
Gr33n Oct 25th, 05, 12:10 PM Steve,
There are speakers in the kick panels too.

My 69 Vert had factory rear speakers but the cardboard boxes where trashed. I ordered the Repo boxes and mounting kit along with new speaker grills from Rick’s. The whole package was outstanding! However there is one thing to watch out for . When you fold the top, cover the grills with a towel as the speaker grill covers will leave impressions of themselves on the plastic rear window on warm days, and if you’re jam’n they make the problem worse. But over all I’m very pleased with the way they look and they sound great, better with the top up than down, but great in any event
PS If your camaro came with the rear speaker option, you will have small speakers in the fromt kick panles---Good Luck
