Any tips on installing this gasket so that it won't leak?

The rubber O-ring?
Make sure the groove in the tank is clean and smooth, and that the sender flange is clean and straight. I've never used any type of sealer or anything on it but that doesn't mean you can't. Just make sure it's compatible with fuel.
