View Full Version : '68 Tilt Steering Column: How much slop should there be?

I have a '68 Camaro with a tilt steering column. I am finding that when I push the steering wheel from side to side or up and down, there is about 1/8 inch of movement in any direction. It feels loose and not tight. Also, as I try to turn the wheel back and forth (as though I am steering the car) there is also about 1/8 inch of free movement in either direction before it seems to start turning the shaft. All of this movement seems to be in the very area where the column tilts. So the whole steering wheel just feels like there is a about 1/8 inch of 'slop' in all movements. Is this normal? Or is the knuckle in the tilt mechanism worn out? Can anyone help out here? What play or slop is there in a new (rebuilt) steering column. I don't know if I should ship it off somewhere to be rebuilt. (Anybody have any good references on a rebuilder?)
Thanks.

I would have to crawl in it and try it, but I don't think my tilt has any slop, but I only ran it tilted in two spots through the years

My rag-joint did take a beating b/c of my car being ordered as an optional, fast ratio, non-power car tho...

And of course, my optional, plastic, fake wooden steering wheel has at least one crack in it at a spoke and is worn smooth in two spots where I always held it..

I have complete instructions on how to disassemble and repair the 1969 and later locking tilt columns. The 1968 tilt column is just a lot less complicated since it does not have the locking features.

Your problem is that there are four screws that anchor the tilt support to the steering column jacket. You need to disassemble the column down past the tilting head in order to apply locktite to the four screws and retighten them (one at a time).

You can go to www.corvettefaq.com/a-car.asp and download the three tilt column disassembly and repair papers as well as the three pictures that go along with the papersfor the 1969 column. There is also a blowup drawing for the 1969 column as well.

This is a link to the very first disassembly and repair paper. It includes a set of tests that you can conduct on the steering column in order to determine the cause of your looseness. This is the first of the three papers.

If you send me your eMail address, I can send you a blowup of the 1968 A-car tilt column. You will be able to see where they are very similar in the support and screw area. This blowup is not included at the above websight.

I am quite sure that you can tighten the four screws youself.
