View Full Version : 3rd gen steering box upgrade, what about pump?
ck 2 Jul 2nd, 05, 08:37 AM I have installed the 3rd gen cardone box on my 69 that I'm doing a frame off on. I still have the original 1st gen pump on it though. While doing a search on here I see that some are having problems with the old style pump and the new box.
Right now everything is easy to get to with the front clip removed. So I want to do as much as I can now while it's easy to get to.
Am I going to have problems with this pump not having enough pressure etc.,without modifying it? Or would I be better of to go ahead and change the pump ? And if I change the pump will it bolt up the same way as my original?
Thanks.
Brian Lewis Jul 2nd, 05, 11:04 AM Try the old pump first. I run a original style pump (brand new though) and it works great. The old one worked just as well but had a small leak and so I replaced it.

morrisclassic Jul 2nd, 05, 11:38 AM I too am running the stock pump, but I had to drill the orifice out a small amount .The car was hard to steer while parking. Call Lee Manufacturing and he will tell you the correct amount to drill. Drilling depends on tire size that you are running.

ck 2 Jul 2nd, 05, 01:18 PM I'll try it then. If I knew the size to drill the orifice out and it wouldn't hurt anything I would go ahead and drill it before I fill it with fluid.
JimM Jul 2nd, 05, 04:15 PM unless you're running huge tires, you might be better off doing a wait and see. My fronts are 225's, and turning the wheel, even stopped, is still a one handed affair.
ck 2 Jul 2nd, 05, 05:46 PM I'll follow your advice and wait. I have jumped the gun before on other things only to wish I had waited. My tires are 215/65/15.
One more question, I used the weatherhead 1446 & 1447 fittings to adapt my original hoses to the new box. I am going to have to cut the flared end off my pressure hose, remove the male fitting, install another fitting (the same size as the return line)and then re-flare the line so it will work.
Has anyone else had this problem, or is everyone using the Lee inserts?
morrisclassic Jul 2nd, 05, 06:30 PM I used the Lee kit, Rag Joint and Flare inserts. I too am running 215/65/15.
If you drill the orifice out be sure and drill a small amount at a time. Use machinist drills. Lee will tell you the increments to drill.

MarkM Jul 13th, 05, 12:32 PM I had the same problem using those fittings. Actually, my pressure line was too long, so I had my NAPA crimp on a new fitting that fit the adaptor.
