View Full Version : To mini tub or not to

My car is going in for paint and this would be the right time to mini tub. Do you guys think it will hurt the value of the car. I wll be putting a new trunk pan in and the quarters are solid but not original. The rest of the car is. The reason for mini tub is my 17 x 9.5 wheels rub on the inside wheel well. So my choice smaller rim and tire or mini tub. Mini tub will be cheaper and less of a hassle because I could keep my rims as well as the width which i love. The other alternative is I would have to sell my rims buy new ones and get smaller ones. What do you guys think?

My vote goes for new wheels with a different wheel offset. Minitubbing a vert poses more problems with the backseat that`s in the vert`s.

How about running a .125-.250 spacer to move the rim out more? It is cheap and easy.

What size tire are you running on that 9.5" rim?

I am running 275 40 17, I am running a spacer already to push it out.
It shouldn't affect the back seat should it? After all I think it is onle 2 inches.
Are the verts seats smaller?

Personally I would go with new rims. You never mentioned what the backspacing is on the rear rims?

67, the issue with convertibles is the convertible top frame depends on the location of the inner wheel well for its hinge location. If you mini-tub, you will have to take very careful measurements of the top frame mount points and shave the bracket to the tubs. The rear seat divider is a strength piece too. You have to re-enforce it after you cut it. The convert seat is already shortened from a coupes, you would shorten it more with the tubs. Can you say cozy? :)

Aren't the DSE Mini tubs for both verts and coupes?

Has anybody ever mini-tubbed a vert and can detail out what had to be changed. Thinking of going with the DSE tubs and then a G-Bar setup. Not 100% yet but just trying to get some ideas of what it would take.

Put a little bigger spacer in there. Or whack the inner house with a big hammer, most likely just rubbing at the very top. Or 255's. Or get different wheels. "mini" tubbing isn't "mini" cheap, or "mini" easy

I haven't mini-tubbed a vert, but did do my own mini-tub on my 69 Coupe. I would think the hinge braces would work the same, just have to be more careful on reusing the braces a vert.

Agree on using a small spacer.

If you are not going to use the wheelwell trim have your body shop trim the outer wheelwell lip narrower and re-weld it. It can be narrowed almost 1". Even if you do want to keep the trim it too can be cut narrower, though not as much, to allow for more tire room. My friend did this and the well could easily swallow a 295 with room to spare.

We have done convertibles and even have top frame braces available to solve the interference issue with the deeper tubs. We had them made when we did Project Prodigy. Without these braces the top would not fold down all the way, stayed up about 5 inches. Now it folds all the way down.

Doing a convertible is harder then a coupe. As mentioned above, the seat mount is more of a super structure on a convertible then just a tin divider like one a coupe. We always do a roll bar and back bracing in our convertible mini tub cars. But I have seen it done without and it works OK. I would jut make sure to close out the ends of the seat brace before installing the tubs.

There is no issue with the top frame other then the change of those braces. The top frame never comes out fo the car during the process.

At the end of the day, it is a PIA at best, but to me worth it to get those big ole tyres in there!
