View Full Version : 69 Z-28 Rearend Code??
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jul 11th, 05, 09:46 AM Did all 69 Z-28 camaros have positraction or did that have to be ordered? Also my rearend code reads as follows: C BN 04U1G1 Ive never seen a "C" at the beginning, any ideas? Even the U1 has me wondering. Thanks
William Jul 11th, 05, 11:25 AM Only for the Z/28, Positraction was not standard equipment nor was it required with the standard 3.73:1 axle ratio. It was required for axle ratios numerically higher than 3.73:1. I believe it was required for all JL8 cars.
For all other performance Camaros Positraction was required with ratios 3.73:1 and up.
CBN is a '70s axle code, likely not the OE axle.
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jul 11th, 05, 11:46 AM No its definantly the correct 69 camaro rearend, it is a BN coded rear however it has a "C" stamped before the "BN" just wondering if anyone has ever seen that before. Thanks
TJS69 Jul 11th, 05, 12:54 PM I'm not sure if you were asking for the ratio or not, but BN = 3.55:1 ratio.
William Jul 11th, 05, 02:07 PM The "C" stamp in front of the "BN" is how 1970 model year axles were stamped.
Check the casting date on the center section and match it to the build date of the car. I will bet it is a 12 bolt from a 1970 Nova.
mike532 Jul 11th, 05, 02:20 PM CBN = 1970 Nova 3.55 open.
The 69 Camaro code would be a BN for the 3.55 open.
As said ,check your date.
TJS69 Jul 12th, 05, 09:30 AM This may sound dumb, as I don't know what exhaust has to do with the rear end, but did that car come with Chambered Exhaust ? The other question I have is the car a "late" 1969 Build ? Remember they built '69 Camaro's for almost Two model years ! Maybe they used a '70 Nova rear, in the build ?
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Jul 12th, 05, 11:49 AM You may have a good point there on the rearend, i will be checking the date code soon. The cars build date is 03E. Im not sure about chambered exhaust.
pdq67 Jul 12th, 05, 06:14 PM Think you could order chambered exhaust as an option..
AND I doubt if they put a Nova code rearend on a Camaro just b/c of coding is all!! In other words, it wouldn't a been in the correct Camaro bin or rack that held them at the point of assembly, but JohnZ know's more about this then I do...

Mark C Jul 12th, 05, 08:37 PM They didn't build Nova's anywhere near where Camaros were made, so there would be no reason to have a stray Nova axle laying around at either Norwood or LA. In order to get the Chambered exhaust required ordering either a big block SS coupe, or a Z28. It was originally part of the z28 option up until November of 68 and then it became an extra cost option. It was discontinued on May 19th 1969. Chambered exhaust had no effect on axle selection.
