Hi,

I've got a 68 SS/RS Factory 325 HP 396 numbers matching Camaro. Options include 12 bolt, delux interior, powerwindows and all the extra gauges. I purchased it a few years ago from someone who had stipped that car in 1985 and never got around to assembling it.

My question relates to the body. I've just got a quote to repair the body (all metal repairs lead filled etc). The quote is nearly $20,000 AU to bring the body back to scratch. This doesn't include assembling it.

I'm wondering if it's worth spending this sort of money on the car or I should go for a cheaper option.

What is are car like this going to be worth when finished?

You might get your oney out of it if you sold it right away. Look on ebay and see what people are charging for that car. It'll probably be around $40,000.00. So yea probably worth it.

That is about $15000 USD. This should buy some major body work. How much body work will it need? Did the quote include paint? I would get some quotes from different body shops to see if the price is in line.

I think a 68 SS/RS Factory 325 HP 396 numbers matching Camaro would definitely be worth saving if it is complete and not to far gone. There are many sharp Camaros on this site that have had the quarters and floors replaced. If it has major collision damage or serious rust out you might be better off to part it out.

I have no idea what Camaros are worth in Australia.

The quote included replacing two quarters. Major rust around the floor, major rust around the back window and rear wheel arches. Quote also included paint. That price was to have all panels fitted and aligned and the whole car painted inside and out. That price gave me a "AS NEW" body.

I've thought about getting another shell which I could get for around $10,000 AU but I would still need to shell out another $8,000 to havew it painted. Then there is the chance that what I purchase has been bent or has bad rust.

The car I have has never been crashed. I purchased it from the second owner.

I paid around $3000 to have a full length right side floor pan and a half pan for the drivers side welded in my 69 in addition to two frame mounts fixed. I even removed the tranny, carpet, seats, consol, etc myself. I know my brother spent $20000 ten years ago on his 72 nova. He had his right side floor replaced, new NOS GM quarters $850 each, new fenders, a small rust hole patched in his driver side door, new trunk floor, and the shop had to make the panel that goes between the rear tail lights since one was available through repro catelogs yet. He also had a sweet paint job done where they put a pearl coat over the blue so it changes colors in different light settings. I think you could find a better deal, but it doesn't seem too high to me. I know labor rates vary between 60 to over 80 dollars a hour around me.
