View Full Version : 89 305 high temps tnt57racing Jul 16th, 05, 07:08 PM i have a 89 rs 305 when in town driveing temp are reaching 230 have 180 thermostat, fan is working . any suggestions? it has been in the 90 outside.driveing it run about 190. need help for intown :beers: TJS69 Jul 16th, 05, 07:28 PM The computer and other smog stuff need a 195* thermostat to operate properly. Install a new 195 t'stat and flush out all the cooling system well, then add new coolant. See if that helps. tnt57racing Jul 16th, 05, 08:51 PM thanks for the advice . how will this help in town temps ? 1PimpinZ28 Jul 16th, 05, 09:56 PM i have an 82 305 with the same problem. The third gen camaro's came factory with high operating temps. I bought a 160 themostsat to lower the temps quite a bit. I havent installed it yet, but when i do, ill tell u if it worked. TJS69 Jul 16th, 05, 11:30 PM Hopefully you will flush out any debris that is partially plugging your radiator, engine and other components. On that '82 I'm sure your temps will go down ! In time your smog system will plug up, because you aren't reaching operation temperature. Notice that companies like Hypertech, reprogram the computer, with a different chip etc., so you can run a cooler t'stat. 1PimpinZ28 Jul 17th, 05, 05:32 PM weel i threw on the 160 t'stat today and ran all of the air out of the system, i didnt do a complete flush however. I just drained all the coolant i didnt need, to replace the t'stat. Well its running much cooler now. It used to run 245 max. now it runs at about 180 max. Incredible!! :clonk: TJS69 Jul 17th, 05, 09:08 PM Nice to see you take our advice. You just put a band aide on your real problem. Remember what was said here, when you get a larger repair bill in the future. I hope you listened, TNT57racing and cured the real problem ! 1PimpinZ28 Jul 17th, 05, 09:39 PM well ok, i will flush out my rad in a couple of days, becuz i do not have time right now. Do you think the temps will drop even more?? TJS69 Jul 17th, 05, 11:53 PM Flushing your radiator may or may not cure the problem either ! It is a good place to start, along with clear airflow etc. A new radiator cap wouldn't hurt, either. My recomendation was more for tnt57racing, who's temps are not that far off from normal ! You haven't told us what yours is running for temps. etc. I can think of four GM vehicles that I have owned, all had 195* t'stat as recommended and always ran fine at 200* I know that water boils at 212*, but not when you run a 50/50 mix and if your cooling system is properly under pressure. That why a new radiator cap would be needed. Your old one should say the PSI rating on it, and replace it with what GM recomends. BreathWeapon Jul 18th, 05, 04:45 PM I never really thought of the rad cap, interesting... tnt57racing Jul 18th, 05, 07:38 PM i am taking your advicxe on the thermostat thanks . i believe i might of found the problem . put a pressure check on radiator found leak in water pump . could this be the cause Dave Birdwell Jul 18th, 05, 08:55 PM the fans were set to come on about 230 on these cars anyway. With the low airflow without the fans running, the temp will shoot right up. I always turn the A/C on, because it turns the fan on and it helps keep it cool. |
