Who gets the best MPG in their 1st gen and what engine/trans combination do you have?

The funding is in place for finishing my 69, and currently I want to be able to drive it frequently on the interstate. I have a 3.08 geared 12 bolt rear in it for now (will eventually go to 3.42-ish), and the 700R4 is ready and waiting. Now all I need is an engine to make it purr again.
I am looking for input on what engine specs you would recommend for getting optimum fuel economy while still having some low end torque to play with. (I'll need some low end torque for the overdrive)
I haven't ruled out fuel injection, but I'm leaning towards carburation for this one.

Seems like everyone I know who has an old muscle car- has it hopped up enough where they can't afford to drive it very often. I don't want to be like that, I'm ready to put some miles on!

What would you recommend for this type of application?

21 mpg at 63 mph with my 3.08's and TH350 behind my 350 with Qjet. Id like a 200R someday to get the mileage into the mid 20's. But this combo is pretty good for interstate for us. :)

My car new with it's L-48 motor, M-20, 3.31's and 25.5" tall tires got 17+ mpg stock and only dropped like to a 16.5 after I put the new -151 cam in it at 1,200 miles!!

My old junk 301 used to get right at 16 and my 406, 15 mpg!!

BUT I could stick my foot in all of them and mileage went right out the window..

I have no idea and do not care :) If it wasn't for the onboard display in my new car, I would not know about that either.

69 Camaro, mild 383 ,4 speed with 342 gear,750 edelbrock,
19.9 @ 70mph. Hope the 5 speed tremec yields more mileage.
Will check mileage after painting.

In my 3975 lb 69 ragtop, 383 (QJet and TBI were about the same), 2004R, 12 bolt 3.73, Vintage AC I got 20-21 MPG on a tank of daily commuting (mix of side street, freeway and bumper to bumper) if I drove her real easy.

Average for daily commuting which included blasting past slow drivers, the occasional burnout (accidentally of course) from a stop sign, etc netted about 16-17 MPG.

If I really drove hard I was probably down about 12-14 MPG. :D

All in all the 383/2004R/3.73 12 bolt ran pretty well (13.3@104 at the track on street tires) and I wasn't afraid to take her anywhere, heat, cold, rain, sunshine it didn't matter as she took me wherever I needed to go in style. I hated to sell the car, but 69 ragtop values got too high for me to justify using it as a daily driver!! My new little Honda commuter gets 40+ MPG and cost about a third of what I sold the 69 ragtop for!

396 with mild cam, M20 4spd, 3.42 gears, 235/60-15 tires on it. Getting me about 7 to 8 mpg.. Haven't looked into messing with the carb yet but I am pretty sure it is running nice and rich.
