View Full Version : Clutch release choppy, not smooth

While releasing and reengaging the clutch as the car gets warm, the pedal motion gets progressively stiff and hard to use. It moves in a choppy motion.
I am using a factory clutch and restoration linkage. I have been through all the components, even drilled out the pivot points and inserted bronze bushings. After reading through some of the posts on this subject, I looked into the bell housing and although I can not see as far as the throw out bearing, everything seems normal.
I do notice when I had someone operate the clutch that the fork moves downward as it goes back. I don't think this is normal because when I force it to stay at the same height, the clutch works smooth. Is this a normal occurance?
Thanks

Welcome to the site Dan

One thing your clutch for should not be dropping down when it is pushed. Is the clutch for a correct clutch fork for your car. The Second is what is the condition of the Throwout bearing, new assuming. You might have to take your transmission off to inspect the input shaft for wear marks from the bearing. Inspect the the pivot location to see that the fork is properly attached to the bellhousing, and that it moves smoothly when moved back and forth.

Everything new on this car. It arrived with a spent turbo 350 in it, now has a Tremec TKO, factory Bell housing Autopart store clutch, TO Bearing and pilot bearing. I also notice that I get a small twist in the fork while depressing the clutch. Definitely looking at the cause of the poor feeling clutch. I am wondering if something at the other end of the fork might be bent. Glad I'm finally zeroing in on the culprit but not looking forward to removing the trannie.
Classic Industries sent me the wrong fork so this one came from a local source. That would make the fork used.

Removed the trannie, removed the fork and found it has bad spring locks as well as being bent where it contacts the TO bearing. Replaced with factory 83-92 Camaro fork altered to the angles of the 67-69. Also replaced the TO bearing.
Re-assembled the car and it works great.
Thanks guys
