: SS trim tag question
69 350 SS Jul 20th, 05, 06:32 PM Just cos a 69 wears a X11 trim tag doesn't mean its an SS right ???
If it is it would have all the bright trim accents and chrome 1/4 panel grilles black out rear panel (not on dark cars) and more ... correct me if wrong ?
But what I wanna know is does it state anywhere on the cowl tag that it is infact an SS or you just gotta look for those things ???
Thanks
Kurt
Eric Kammerer Jul 20th, 05, 06:44 PM Welcome Kurt!
Lots of good info on the X codes at www.camaros.org.
You are correct, X11 was a small block car with style trim, not necessarily an SS.
X22 (SS396 with Style Trim), X55 (SS350 w/o Style Trim), and X66 (SS396 w/o Style Trim) are the models where an X code alone tells on an SS. And the X codes weren't used until later in production (see the site above).
Black out rear panel is a big block only thing.
kz1000ltd Jul 20th, 05, 06:44 PM You are right, an X-11 can be a small block SS, but it doesn't have to be, you have to look for clues. The bracket above the drivers side rear frame rail is a good clue (first picture), as is front disk brakes, proportioning valve under the drivers side door (second picture), 12 bolt, factory tach with the correct redline, engine and tranny #'s, etc.............I took these pictures the day I went out and looked at my 69 X-11 RS/SS 350 car, proving it was an RS was also fun, but the clues are there for that also! Hope this helps! KZ

COPO9737 Jul 20th, 05, 07:24 PM I owned a 1969 Yenko Camaro that was a X-11.
Mark C Jul 20th, 05, 07:26 PM You guys make it harder than it has to be. Except for the three week period period from 12B to the start of 01A an X11 with 2 fuel lines is an L48 SS. During those three weeks the car could be an LM1 or an L48 so you have a 50/50 chance of getting an SS just looking at one thing on the car.
The tail pipe adapter will be on any car ordered with dual exhaust. Not sure how many of the non SS, non-Z28 engines dual exhaust was available on, the LM1 for sure could be ordered with duals, possibly the L65 350/250HP, don't think the LF7 307/200HP could have duals.
The brake valve is associated with the 12 bolt rear axle and not specifically with the car being an SS, or Z28 (just so happens these cars all use 12 bolts). If you ordered options that resulted in a 12 bolt axle being installed (like an LM1/M20 combo) you also got the brake valve. Not all cars with 12 bolts got this valve either. The valve is used at specific times of the year, and not used at others in similar vehicles.

So a 350 SS Doesn't have to have a 12 bolt rear ???? What about disc front ??? does it have to have that ??? Its a bit hard to identify these X11 cars !!! Maybe I go over my DATA books again ???

Kurt S Jul 21st, 05, 12:58 AM Most 69 SS's got 12 bolts. But not all cars with 12 bolts were SS's.
All SS's had discs.
And dual exhaust was optional on any V8.
Skip the data books. Read the CRG site, a lot more accurate......

So it wasn't a hack job! Nice! I saw that bracket welded to the frame on mine and I thought "what an odd way to fix rot or a crack..." The rest of the frame is perfect though. You made my day.
kz1000ltd Jul 22nd, 05, 07:58 AM Thank you very little..........:D:D:D:D:D:D

I think you misunderstood me. I thought mine was a hack job. Seeing yours is the same means it came from the factory that way right?
kz1000ltd Jul 22nd, 05, 12:08 PM No, I was just funnin', don't take me seriously, nobody else does...........:):):):)
