Want to no how to figure out date coding on steering boxes?
How do you read the numbers?

Example
1st

013 0

5691676
* 37 * ---- 6

2nd

290 7

5691676
* 26 * ---- 285

These are kind of what is on top of boxes. both are power boxes too.
The 6 and the 285 are to the right of the casting number . The ---- is for spacing over
I have a 1967 camaro 7B month built and looking for standard box for this week?

Power boxes have the date stamped on the alum top cover. JJJ julian date and Y year.

So the top one is 13th jan 1970, second one is day 290 1967. The year could be a decade off too. Part number decode is needed for that.

How close should this be with the build date of a car?

This might help too:

http://carib.stanford.edu/gert/tree/julian_leap.html

Mine is dated about a week before the car's build date.

The car was built the third week of Nov 1968, my power steering box says "317 8" for Nov 12.

I'm not sure how close it has to be, though. This is just my observation.

Thank you gentleman. I traded my original manual box away for power steering and now found out that they are date coded! silly me.
I did contact the guy i traded with and hope he can find it.
Been over a year though.
