View Full Version : Pace Cars Were Expensive When New
Mark C Jul 21st, 05, 08:04 PM Heres a window sticker from a 69 Pace car. Except for having front shoulder belts (which were 26 bucks) the car doesn't really have that many options beyond the mandatory ones and the final price is $4325. Should explain why they sat on lots for quite a while, and why the vast majority of them don't (or didn't originally) have many options beside the mandatory ones.

BTW the car is on Ebay, and it's not mine:

36j1967 Jul 24th, 05, 08:23 PM What is the difference in the base cost between a IPC and non Z11 convertible? Does the sticker have a cost for the Z11 option? I assume the RPO costs are the same on the adds. I cant read the posted photo.

Rsmith1969 Jul 24th, 05, 09:01 PM nice car with documentation
Kurt S Jul 24th, 05, 10:34 PM RPO Z11 - $36.90.
Nice car, but it's been fluffed some. Engine looks repainted.
Master is wrong, shift knob, misc stuff.
36j1967 Jul 25th, 05, 02:26 PM RPO Z11 $36.90, sounds like a bargain to me if that was the only cost over and above a like equiped RS/SS rag top? Would seem to just cover the cost of the cowl hood substitute. Look at the markup on limited series production vehicles such as Donnalli's or Eddie Bauer's etc. and it seems marketing figured out how to make a buck on our vanity.
al8apexer Jul 25th, 05, 02:50 PM the reason they sat on the lots had nothing to do with the price
it was the colors!
NO ONE wanted an orange interior convertible with orange stripes, (same with the 97 Corvette Pace car, no one wanted yellow interiors - MANY Corvette Pace Cars were "de-paced" to a regular interior to get them sold)
that is why orange and yellow houndstooth interiors are "rare"
rare = no one wanted them when they were new ...
al8apexer Jul 25th, 05, 03:04 PM car is sold
too bad, sure hope no one believed that guy
that particular Pace Car has had the quarters repainted, the driver's side at least (look at the end of the pin stripe), or the pin stripe redone (poorly)
Non console shift knob, wrong master cyl (already pointed out)
"original" E78-14 spare tire - interesting since they all (Z10 & Z11) came with FIVE F70 tires ....
his claim of a perfect original is inflated, just like his ego :-)
It IS nice to see CORRECT rear stripes though - look where the stripe ends on the spoiler (this is a Norwood car based on the way the stripe is in the rear, the Van Nuys stripes went all the way on the lid)
RPOZ11 Jul 26th, 05, 12:08 AM I can tell you I know my car sat until February 1970 before selling based upon the California License plates that were issued to it! I verified this with the original owner!
Chuck L Jul 27th, 05, 07:34 AM one of my Pace Cars which has an 02D trim tag sat on a dealers lot in upper new york tell the bill of sale date was 8-13-70.. it had a birthday at the dealer.
36j1967 Jul 27th, 05, 10:03 AM Alot depended on the location of the dealer. They sold rather well here in the midwest and inparticular Indiana. I dont think it was because the color combination was unattractive. The public was buying these cars for everyday drivers at the time. This car would have been very flambouyant to take to the grocery. Another factor would have been owning a car from an already concluded event that would not yet have any special historical significance (last years model). It's no secret that the ZL1 program fizzled due to lack of buyer interest at the time. It would have been a hard sell for a grocery getter as well.

Do not agree. I have seen plenty of Van Nuys built Z11s & Z/28s with OE paint and the stripes ended under the spoiler.
Chuck L Jul 27th, 05, 02:46 PM Guys, I have a 69 pace car that I just started the restoration process on, I have the hood, front upper valance and grill out so far, (I have 6 hrs logged in the book on this car so far) But she is still in original paint with strips I have hundreds of pics all ready of this car.
If you need info or pics of pin stipe locations, (heights & widths) or any general info let me know. Be glad to post pics if needed.
al8apexer Jul 28th, 05, 12:19 AM Do not agree. I have seen plenty of Van Nuys built Z11s & Z/28s with OE paint and the stripes ended under the spoiler.
that's what I tried to say, they are different than the Norwood stripes
William Jul 28th, 05, 06:46 AM Once again I disagree. There is no difference between Norwood & Van Nuys Z/28 striping. Both plants used the same Assembly Instruction Manual and paint masks.
By "under the spoiler" I mean striping does not continue onto the rear lip of the trunk lid on cars built with spoilers. The striping was applied with the spoiler installed; the stripes on the lid ended just under the front edge of the spoiler. Camaro Corral did a feature on a Van Nuys built Z11 with OE paint and that is how it was done.
Both Hot Rod and Car Life did tests on Z/28s and the photos show no striping on the edge of the lid.
al8apexer Jul 29th, 05, 03:33 PM and once again disagreeing is a part of the learning process, we all learn
Van Nuys DID do things different than Norwood when it came to paint (among other things)
how else can you explain the stripe colored cowl area on the Van Nuys Z28's and not the Norwood cars?
How about this statement then, SOME of the rear spoiler equipped 1st Gen cars had "different" treatment than the "norm" of the Norwood cars
I have seen original paint cars with this anomaly, back in the 80's before it was a big deal, even thought I knew it was "different"
That is why so many cars done on the left coast had the rear stripes done 'wrong" 20 years ago
Maybe by the time the Pace cars were produced, they "synched" with Norwood on the rear, I do not know, but the cowls were still stripe colored on Van Nuys 1st Gen Camaros
Chuck L Jul 29th, 05, 04:02 PM Is there nobody on this site with a Van Nuys pace car with original paint? All of mine are norwood cars, and only 1 with original paint, but I know 2 people, 1 with 2 pace cars in arizona and 1 in Iowa with 6 pace cars I will contact them this weekend and see if any of theres are/where Van Nuys cars.
al8apexer Jul 29th, 05, 07:25 PM I would hazard to say that neither of you Norwood cars has the orange cowl
Chuck L Jul 29th, 05, 09:07 PM Jim,
I have 4 norwood pace cars now, and hoping to add 1 more soon, but none of the pace cars have orange cowls. like the Van Nuys Z/28's
Kurt S Jul 29th, 05, 09:09 PM My Fathom green Z (Norwood car) has a white cowl. More overspray than solid color on the one side.
RamAirDave Jul 29th, 05, 09:29 PM Back in the early 90s, my dad bought and restored a Norwood 69 PC. Original paint, still had the sticker from the dealer in IN. Luckily we were able to call them and get paperwork.
I have no pics to verify, but I'm almost certain that there was orange painted under the cowl panel. I can see it in my mind, but unfortunately I cant post that...
dave
al8apexer Jul 30th, 05, 08:02 PM Norwood cars had orange overspray, Van Nuys cars (and I've already posted pics on this earlier) were painted from fender to fender stripe color on the top of the cowl
I have never seen a Norwood car (original) painted like that
all the Z11, Z10 & Z28 Van Nuys cars were
Mark C Jul 30th, 05, 08:25 PM Bet you've never seen an LA Z10 painted like that. LA didn't make any Z10s.
