I have just under 20K on this tranny and about 8-10K into use, it started getting hesitant to get into 1st and reverse. Sometimes it will go into gear with no effort, but most of the time it's hesitant, but will always go into gear. I have always used GM Synchromesh, but is there something else I can try or is might there be something wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Check your clutch adjustment to make sure it's disengaging. First gear is synchronized but reverse isn't. If it's grinding going into reverse it's possible the clutch isn't disengaging. What clutch are you using and did you check bell housing alignment when you installed the transmission?

A Zoom Kevlar clutch and how do you check alignment?

To check alignment you need a dial indicator to measure run out.
There are many articles on this on the net. Here is one from Car Craft. Just scroll down to the bell housing write up. A Tremec TKO should be no more than + or - .005". http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/81298/
Did you check the clutch adjustment to see if this is the problem first? Usually a runout problem will affect more than just one gear. Also you should have an inch to 1-1/2" free play at the top of the pedal and engagement should happen a comfortable distance off the floor.

I'll check the engagement this weekend. Runout will be a bit more difficult. I hope it's the engagement!
Thanks Jim

Checked and readjusted engagement. Reverse still needs a little help, but first is perfect. Thanks again for the info.

As your clutch wears/breaks in a little you can adjust it to allow a little less free play at the top of the pedal. This will cure your disengagement problem. Until then drop the shifter into fourth or second before reverse. This will stop the gearset from turning and you can engage reverse without grinding.
