I finally got around to fixing a leaky kickdown cable this weekend. I pulled the header and swapped out the existing (and wrong cable) for a new repop. cable.. I read all the great posts and was pretty sure I could set the cable to work properly. Yeah friggin right! The cable is too long, but the bolt trick should work . The dilemna is that when I try to open carb to WOT, the adjustment housing pulls forward even with it in the locked position. There is a slight difference between cables, in that, the new cable has a depression type locking mechanism and not the familiar pull out and lock style. Simply stated I believe to adjust the new style cable you depress the steel "D" shaped button and then let go when you have your desired position. I need everyone's two cents worth here, Why would the cable housing pull through the locking mechanism? Is something wrong in the tranny, I know I got that little sucker hooked up because I drank a beer after I finally got it! :beers: It is a very hard pull to get that cable to move and like I stated, I don't think the cable is moving, just the adjustment housing right at the cable bracket.
Oh yeah the little @@#$@#$@#$ still leaks!! :(

Jake,
It sounds like it is working correctly to me. When you go to WOT the cable should get tight, then pull the housing forward until the carb gets to WOT. Once it is at that point, it should be adjusted properly. The housing will stay in that position.

thanks bill
I had to leave town for a week and had no internet right after I posted. The resulting dilemna here is that the cable does not return after I set it. It stays out! Any ideas?? :waving:

If the cable doesn't return, I suspect the came loose at the tranny during install. Here is a good site for the proceedure.

Thanks to all!
The actual problem was that the new cable has a smaller opening on the tranny end than the previous cable ( a much older cable)and the 90 degree wire that you hook the cable to got stuck in there. I decided to "pinch" that wire a little to make the offset in it a little closer together. It freed up and the cable pulled out and returned freely after that.
Some points to ponder if any of you go thru this change.
1. The new cables are longer, thus making it difficult to keep off of headers. I chose to use that steel hose braiding to protect the wire. Cut a piece a foot or so and widen it, wrap around detent cable and secure with aluminum tape. There are other cleaner methods but that's all I had in the garage!
2. This is a huge one. Make sure you have done all you want BEFORE putting the header back on. Althoug I am quite good at uninstalling and reinstalling that little @#$@$#, it does get a little depressing trying to tighten that rear header bolt three or four times.
Again thanks TC'ERS for the fast reliable help

Jake, I went through the same thing last year when I swapped out tranny's and noticed a bad kink in the old cable. It is a pain to replace. Thanks for posting the outcome. Someone in the future will benefit from this posting!
