I have a reasonably stock 1967- L30- 327 in my Camaro rs. I had in my near future a complete rebuild. The motor was running great, but it was in need of a fresh start. On the way to a local show, I was exiting the freeway, and I could hear a constant pop, pop, pop, pop. Not a knock. The motor struggled to idle and would spit or cough through the carb at times upon the slightest accelleration. I limped it home. It sounded like a compression popping. But while in gear and no accelleration, no popping. Give it gas...pop, pop. Any ideas? Valve? Dan

Sounds like an exhaust valve not opening, could be a broken rocker arm, broken spring, bent pushrod or a wiped out cam lobe. Pull the valve covers and have someone turn the key (with the coil wire reomved from the coil) and watch the rocker arms move. I bet one exhaust valve isn't opening.

Maybe a jumped nylon toothed timing chain??

A flattened exhaust lobe will most definately do that. A loose or heavily worn timing chain can do the same thing, but in my experience it has to be seriously worn to pop back thru the carb like that. You haven't by chance removed and reinstalled the plug wires have you?

Well, I will start at the top by removing the valve covers....then the timing chain....then dynomite!

There is a God! The rear rocker closest to the firewall, on the #7 cylinder broke. Easy fix. Thanks to you all with your input! Dan
