That's smart. Maybe his local authorities will use his ebay auction as a confession that he retagged a car.

here is his reply: " trust me everything i am doing is legal all i am doing is selling pieces of a car that are not even enough to call a car"

but selling parts of his car is ok but he is MOVING the VIN and engine to another car, he doesnt get it. Someone else want to clarify it for him? :clonk:

well, at least he posted his vin so you can cross reference it for later use when he sells his car that he switched vins and motors with.

I don't get what he did with the VIN, but the parts he is selling as parts have no bearing on it as he is not selling a titled vehicle, only parts. I do not see a frame included with the sale either. What he is selling you cannot title. It would have to be used for a resto project and that project would have to have a frame (with a VIN) and title.

In CA (FYI) you may want to look up the definition of a car customizer in the DMV rules. He may have the frame with the etched VIN on another car that the tag is on. VIN tag should be technically attached and witnessed by the CHP though.

But to the immediate point on the sale of a shell without a frame or VIN plate not being sold as a titled vehicle and for parts only, it's perfectly legal.

he can not put his vin from that car to another car. its like your finger prints. it belongs to you and nobody else.

as far as CHP, they issue their own vin numbers so you will know it has been retagged.

I sent him another nice note that parting out the car is fine, but in his ebay ad he states "Im moving the VIN and engine to another car" and that is the illegal part. Moving a VIN as Angel says, is not legal. The VIN should go with the cowl/dash etc as one piece or it should be destroyed completely so it doesnt show up on another vehicle. Thats my understanding of Fed. VIN law.

Camaro's don't have the VIN stamped on the frame, at least not that I've seen. The issue is transfering the VIN to another car period. It's not illegal to sell the parts that he has.

ok here we get the rest of the story, he is having a new camaro built and intends to use that VIN... I still dont see how that can be legal unless the state allows it or something Im missing. Here goes our new body builders , yikes

"no it is not another car, it is a body that is being remade by gm in north carolina, a company is making the 69 unibody all assembled and you can buy it bolt on to the frame ready, so i don't have 2 vins or 2 cars just one vin and alot of parts"

Maybe he worded it wrong. He should have said: "I'm moving another body under the old vin!!!" ;)

He's nuts.
This one is almost done. Versus not having one that's still not available and is of unknown quality.......

For the record:
VIN is 124379N536281, seller is Brian, frontiermotors9185.

Sounds like hes moving his coupe VIN to a convertible Dynacorn body tub. Since they aren't making coupe bodies yet are they?

I guess we all agreed previously that this was a "legal" repair of a vehicle.

Not sure what the feds would consider legal repair? Ive never run across this myself, so I dont know but if you build a new car doesnt the state issue you a new VIN thats some made up thing within the state its built? If you build a kit car of any kind I thought you were issued a new VIN by your own state. My thought was you cant move a VIN from another vehicle, no matter what, as Angel said like a fingerprint. Would be interesting to see how states handle new built cars.

The dynacorn body is not another vehicle, its just a big quarter panel. Of course moving a coupe VIN to a convertible body is not to smart, but thats another story.

The CARS (The guys who built the convertible kit car for Hot Rod.) display at the Camaro Nationals had an unassembled convertible body for viewing and inside this body there was a sign that read hardtops coming soon
