i changed oil on a 69 camaro that I recently purchased. At the time of changing it had a short oil filter, and I put the delco truck filter (PF1218) on it (which I do on all of my cars). The next day I took it to my muffler guy to re-do the tail pipes and he made a comment about how close the oil filter was to the header pipe and that we would go back to the short filter to get more clearance. He said that I was running the risk of melting a hole in the oil filter. I have never heard of such a thing - is this possible? The filter is approximately 1/4 inch from the header

Just use a PF454, same filter just shorter. It took the place of the old PF25.

I will if I have to, but I just like the long filters - most people I have talked to say that it wont hurt the filter but i just wanted to know if anyone had heard of something like that

IMHO - I would use a good quality short filter. (AC's are good) I've never heard of a filter melting, but if it just raises the temperature of your oil - that is not a good thing. :)
