I am new to classic muscle cars, and have some questions about the VIN #'s, cowl tag, #'s and block #'s, and "hidden" vin #'s. While going through the forum I see that there is a lot of cross-referencing done between them. A couple of questions:

1. where is the "hidden vin"?
2. What numbers are you cross referencing between the vin and Cowl tag?
3. What are you looking for when you cross reference the Block # and vin #?

I have looked at several cars but only one appeared "original" to me. I'd like more info so I REALLY know what I am buying (ps it is a 68 camaro if that matters). Any other info would be greatly appreciated as well.

Living here in N. California, everybody seems to have an original California car!!!

Greg,
Welcome to the site!!

1. There are two Hidden VIN's. One is behind the heater box and one is inside the passenger side cowl vent.

2. There is a date code on the cowl tag and the VIN sequence needs to be within that time frame.

3. The partial VIN is stamped on the block. Either by the oil filter or on the pad on the block under the alternator.

The above is correct for a '69. I'm asumming the '68 is the same. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.
