I was going to remove the floorpan from the outside in... meaning I was going to remove the spot welds from the outside. I started removing the spot welds and noticed that there was 3 pieces of sheet metal underneath. Question is what is the middle piece of sheet metal? Can I still remove the spot welds from the outside? Are the spot welds connected to all 3 pieces? Am I going to drill out spot welds on the outside only to find there are different spot welds for the floorpan on the inside? Thanks in advance... I'm looking forward to driving this camaro and not pulling a Fred Flinstone down the middle of the road!!!

Robert, are you going to replace the floor pan or just doing some repairs? If you are going to replace it don't waste time cutting out each individual spotweld. I'd use a cutting wheel to remove the majority of the old pan, leaving a small lip where the spotwelds are. Then you can "peel" off the remaining strip or grind off each spotweld and go from there.

I'm not sure where you have found three layers of sheet metal, but a stock floor pan should have only one layer- reinforcements or other structural components may give the appearance of more layers, but be careful not to cut through any supports or reinforced areas before figuring out if they are included on the new pan!

Thanks for the reply Scott. The 3 pieces I'm talking about are underneath where they have spot welded the floorpan, the rocker and there is another piece in between the two of those. Make any sense? I'm replacing the entire thing in two halves. Do you think the floorpan has been replaced before and they just cut it out and put a new one in and left the lip from the old floorpan? Thanks.

That third piece I believe would be the inner rocker

Thanks Stan. I knew there was an inner rocker, just didn't know what it consisted of. Will it be okay to drill through both of the rockers and then weld everything back up with the existing holes? Thanks.

I removed my floor from the inside,I cant remember if the spot welds lined up outside to inside.I suppose what you want to do would work as long as you get the floor spotwelds loose. But you just cant always drill the spotweld out exactly perfect that it pops loose, you need to do a bit of chiseling here and there and in that case you would need to be right at the floor spotweld.I will look at mine again to see how it was put together.I think the floor was welded to the inner and the outer was welded to the inner on the other side, perhaps here and there there was a little more penetration and all three were welded together but I know I took the floor out without drilling into both rockers .I did replace one outer rocker and the entire floor.I probably have pics somewhere I can send you via email.Hope that helps some.

Thanks again Stan for the reply. I'm looking forward to getting this back to a happy condition!! The previous owner... I wont say what this car has been through. Anyways, my email is rwinter@tcsn.net I'm getting ready to order a Moser 12 bolt and I still have to hook up the Muncie tranny to the proper linkage I had to order... it's a long story that I'm sure plenty of members have to tell!! Thanks again.

Try the link under my signature and then click the <FLOOR> folder. Many pictures of the floor replacement there.
