Before you say anything...I read all post I could find in the forums and no one has been really given a good definative answer or has been provided a pic to those who have asked this question. I would like to ask again.

Can anybody provide a pic of what the cutout looks like? Maybe do a cartoon drawing or something? I have small round holes (@3") in my originals already and would at least like to put something in there. Possibly a factory style set up.

Thanks.

I bought the repro speaker grilles from Rick's. Then cut the holes to fit the speakers in. I got the impression that even from the factory, it wasn't an exact science.

I was guessing the same thing. But somebody out there has a factory set up in their kick panels. If I have to guess, I want to guess by looking at a pic of a factory cut-out.

Is there something secret about these cutouts........

Jim

Now that's what I call service. I found the auction and copied the image of the front side with the speaker cover and the back side without the speaker cover.

Can anyone host these pics?

Thanks a million

My brother has a 1969 ss 350 with the factory kick pannel speakers. I have one out because I was thinking about puting them in my 69 vert but decided not to. If you can wait till after this weekend I will try to post some pictures of it. It even has the factory speaker and cover with it. His car is a future project and is for the most part untouched, will be a nice car some day original hugger orange RS SS 350 with a factory manual 3 speed trans, factory A/C deluxe interior and lots of other nice options. Body good under the car but top sheet metal is junk ( Flordia Car).

Sure, I'll take a pic. I wouldn't mind getting a second opinion so to speak on the cutouts. It would be a good clue as to whether the cutout was done with a template or freelanced out to the guy on the line with a box cutter.

If anyone is interested in the cutout pics e-mail me and I'll e-mail them out.

Gary, as you mentioned, you did a search and couldn't find the answer / pics so maybe you could post them here when you get them so the next time (there will be a next time) someone has the question, they'll do a search, find your thread, see your pics and the world will be a better place! lol. That always annoys me, I do a search on something, while reading I think, "oh oh, Im gonna get the answer" then it turns into an "email me this" or "PM me that" lol and I feel left out. I'd like to see the pic's, especailly of the OEM stuff.

OK Guys, I put some pictures of the speaker cut outs, speaker and cover on my web page. I also put a couple new pictures of the progress on my convertible. Just click on the link at the bottom of this post. Be sure to go to the second page also. I hope these pictures help you out.

BAMiller...Can you put up some masking tape and take some measurements for us to see where to make the cuts at least for the side closest to the door jam edge of the kick panel?

As for the pics I got off ebay I can't e-mail them right now, I am in Lafayette, La. visiting family. My father died of cancer at 9 AM this morning just minutes after my brother walked out the door to find out when it was time for his morphine and when I went to look at something on ESPN he wasn't breathing anymore. I appreciate if you all would say a prayer. What a great man he was.

Great pics, I've bookmarked your site. I'm thinking of using a pair of 4x6 plate mounted componant speakers (like this: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=15371) in my kick panels. If I mount them tweeters down, would they fit fluch with the face of the kick panel? they "woofers" are 1 15/16" deep. (my kick panels are kinda hanging out not, vent's still glued on and can't measure accurately until/unless I cut the hole...)?

I will try to get back overthere next week and get some measurements.
Sorry to hear about your father, I lost mine when I was 16 years old the same time that I got my Camaro done the first time. That was 25 years ago now, he was very proud that his 16 year old could restore a basket case car. One day he took my car and drove to all of his friends houses to show it off to them. I guess that why I could never bring myself to sell it.

Sorry to hear about your father Gary. That's 2 this week. One of my customers, a good friend for 15 years, passed yesterday. Someone really needs to find a cure for that stuff...

You need to be careful cutting the holes in your kick panels, there is a 4" by 6" (roughly) opening in the structure of the car, behind the kick panel. The speaker magnets and rear of the speaker cone have to fit inside this cutout or the kick panel will be bowed outward. Original speakers actually had square magnets on them, and the stock replacements sold at the resto houses have round magnets and clear the opening by about 1/4". Aftermarket speakers need to have the same sized magnets and a fairly shallow speaker cone to fit flush.

The speaker holes were cut with a template at the factory. The same template was included when you ordered the front speakers from the dealer. Thought I had a jpeg of it, but I can't find it on my PC.

Thanks guys for your emotional support. My mom is flying in from PHOENIX this morning and my younger brother is flying in from PHEONIX tuesday. My mom lost her husband (my stepdad) from lung cancer in May. So it's been rather unnerving dealing with all this cancer stuff this summer. I'm really getting tired.

Looking at the cutouts it looks obvious that a trmplate was used, not done free hand as I originally thought. If the measurements could be posted taped to a kickpanel i was planning on getting out my machinest rule and slowly do the cutting. I wonder if the factory used a heated blade of sorts to help cut. Looks very clean if you ask me. That material is pretty tuff stuff to cut by hand.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. My Dad died of cancer at 55. I was in college. I had no idea how much I would miss him until I got older and started really wishing he was there to ask all of the important questions that come up later in life. Just know that you are not alone in your loss and that people are there with you in whatever way they can be...

O.K, I have some pictures of the right kick panel that I think will help. I'll send to anyone who can post. I do prefer that it be posted for everyones information. What I did was cut a template out of a bad kickpanel that had the factory speaker cutout. From that all I have to do is place this over a regular kickpanel and cut the hole. It works everytime. Since these are measurements using a camera, I suggest that you use you own judgement when cutting the holes to make sure they are in the correct position. In other words, begin small and work your way up to the correct opening size using the good old tried and true method of trial and error.

Gary, sorry about your loss. Know that your father is in a better place. I lost my grandfather to Cancer and just had a perfectly healthy friend be diagnosed with it a few weeks ago.

BAMiller, can you tell me what color of red your car is painted? Looks great in the photos. I understand your attachment for it, but if you ever change your mind on selling it, let me know.

I was wondering if anyone tried the aftermarket kickpanels with the speaker cutouts already in the (customautosound)

I bought them & installed them, they look great but I'm worried about the vent. Their's have only a trap door where the original vent was, & I don't know if water will get inside the car...

I posted a new picture of the kick pannel cutout on the second page of my web site. The black lines are what I am going to measure for you but I won't be able to do it untill thursday at the soonest.

The Color of the car is an old AMC color I think it is called oriental red. It is the color I had it painted the first time I had it done but I did not know what paint it was. So I had my friend who works for a PPG paint store use the prophet tool on the old paint and thats what it said it was. I was on the fence about painting it the original red but I thought it looked to dark from the chips, I don't know maybe I should have gone with the factory color but it is done now and I do like it.

OK the picture on the second page of my web site now has all the measurements filled in. If I were going to cut these holes I would get the speaker covers first and layout the postion of them before I started to cut.
Hope this helps , Bill

Eric, thanks... was on the road today, didn't get email at the office, but I'll look for yours tomorrow.

Bill, great pic with dimensions, it's so hard without then to get anykind of perspective... you can make a fly look like a hbouse of you try... If I'm reading right, I see 2 and 2/3" depth above the lower hinge bolts? that means my speakers will fit!! Think I'll go buy them tomorrow! I'm going to set a 2 way componant plate speaker, with a 4" and a separate tweeter, under the repro grilles.... goody goody, I can finally get my interior in!! thanks guys, I'll be sure to take and post pics.

Ok guys...I'm back home and trying to get myself straightened out to be ready for work on Monday. Thanks again for the emotional support in my fathers passing.

Just wanted to say this post ranks way up there in regards to info needed for the front kick panel speaker installment and speaker cut out dimensions. Maybe T.C. can perminently add this to the site for easy access.
