I bought an 89 RS for my son - it was re-po'd.
They broke the ignition switch and column into pieces in the process.
Apparently this is a 89 with the VAPS theft prevention system, because it
had the clip in the ign key.
I mistakely bought a column and replaced it, and the new one is from an 89
- but I just discovered it doesnt have VAPS. The key doesnt have the chip
-
and the car wont turn over or start. I have the original key and the oem
key for the replacement column. IS there ANYWAY to wire the car to start?
The dealer said they cant make a chip key blank to match the replacement
cylinder, and it obviously wouldnt work - since the column isnt wired on the top end
for the chip. Someone siggested putting a resistor in the two small wires
at the bottom.... - the two small wires connect into a small harness with two other wires
that disappear into the wire loom under the dash....
Ideas?
Car will NOT turn over with switch, can turn over with a remote start buttonm but injectors dont fire.

The wires for the VATS system go into the key cylinder. Does the new colum have 2 small orange wires coming out of the bottom? The car will not start untill the VATS module sees the right key code. There are 15 differant key codes for that system. First you need to find out what key code the car has. you can have the origanal key tested at any GM dealer and they will tell you what code it is. Then you will have to buy a key blank of the right code and have it cut for the new key cyl. in the new colum. If there are no wires from the new colum you will have to replace the key cly. in the new colum and have a new key cut with the right code. Or you could try to measure the resistance of the resistor in the original key and wire in a resistor of the same value into the wires that go to the module. This is what they do when they put remote starters in these cars. I have also seen people put the key in another lock cly and just tie the whole thing up under the dash.

THANK YOU
Wired the 3.003 resistor inline and started immediately!

Had to copy this out of an old post because its a pain to find:
Your car has a GM VATS system. The key to the system is the special ignition key that contains the resistor pellet, this pellet connects to the VATS module which allows it to:
1. Signal the ECM.
2. Close the starter circuit.
Without a signal response from the VATS module, the ECM will not allow fuel injection or starter operation.
VATS is not connected to the alarm system, so it is active even if the alarm system is defeated, or if the car is left unlocked.
The main component of the system are the ignition key with resistor pellet and the VATS decoder module. The pellet in the key is just a resistor, it will be one of 15 specific values. The ignition cylinder has contacts that connect between the two sides of the ignition key pellet. Wiring carries this resistance value to the VATS decoder module, where it is compared to the value stored in the module. If they match, the car starts. If they do not match, the starter circuit and fuel injectors are disabled. A timer (approximately 4 minutes) is also activated if an improper resistance is read. Each time an attempt is made during this delay period, the timer will be reset. So it is important to wait at least 4 minutes before another attempt is made.
The main problem with the system in the first three years of production (85 till 88) was the material that the contacts of both the ignition key and ignition cylinder were made of. This material was prone to premature wear, causing poor contact, an incorrect resistance being seen by the decoder module and a no start condition.
This system uses a resistor in the key, use a digital volt meter set to ohms and put 1 lead on each side of the vats chip in the center of the key, find a resistor to match your reading, you can buy a resistor of this value at any Radio Shack store ¼ watt will do. You then need to remove the hush panel under the steering column. Disconnect C281 (two-cavity connector at base of steering column with two black wires in the female end and one yellow and one brown wire in the male end NOTE this is a Corvette connector number and wire colors Camaros may differ - get a wiring manual). Your newly purchased resistor goes into the male side of this connector, so you'll need to crimp a couple of female pins to the resistor legs.

New here. I have a suggestion. The guy at http://www.tbichips.com burns hot rod chips. When doing that he'll remove the VAPS system for nothing. You could call him? savoo
