View Full Version : console oil press gauge leaks
BAMiller Aug 13th, 05, 03:41 PM I am trying to hookup the oil pressure gauge in the center console on my 69 but I can't get the line to seal at the gauge. (factory gauge) The first line kit I got had a newer type of furl with a taper only on one side this would not work. I found an older type furl and nut with a taper on both sides and a taper on the inside of the nut but with it tight it still won't seal. The nut is not bottoming out on the gauge, but with the nut tight you can still spin the line in the gauge. Has anyone run into this? I don't know if I need a different furl or maybe a different nut. I don't have the orignal nut anymore.
JimM Aug 13th, 05, 03:53 PM I remember this... it's been here before. A search would pull the info up, but I seem to remember that GM used a weird fitting, and it's the only one that fits. I "might" also be remebering that repor guages use a slightly different fitting?
namz111 Aug 13th, 05, 04:38 PM heres the easy fix for this.... go get a cheap oil gauge and use that to tighten the furrel on the line first, then disconnect it and hook it back up to the factory gauge... its simple and works everytime, btw yes GM used a special furrel and thats the only way you can get it to tighten on the factory gauge, but like i said this way works just as well and never leaks
stope4 Aug 13th, 05, 10:50 PM Mine also leaked and I had a new NOS guage. What I noticed was the length of the black line between the end that is inserted into the guage and the furl is too long. For some reason the furls on the aftermarket Black Lines are crimped in place and do not move when you tighten the nut on the guage. What I did was cut the line upstream of the furl and removed the insert. I threw the little piece with the furl in the trash. (Trying to remove the furl most likely will destry it.) I then went to the local auto parts store and purchased one of the white plastic atermarket oil lines and took the furl from that. I place that furl on the black plastic line where you cut the piece off, inserted the brass insert on the end of the black line and then slid the furl in place where it will seat into the guage. Make sure the length of line between the end and the furl is less than what it was before you cut the line. The ideal would be to remove the guage and make sure the new furl seats correctly. The line should not turn when installed properly.
JimM, I remember that post. I still can't figure out exactly what they were talking about, unless the special fitting is the piece on the back of the guage. All I know is my guage seals properly with the brass insert, furl and black line. There are no special fittings.
BAMiller Aug 14th, 05, 07:48 AM What do you mean by brass insert? All I have is the furl and the nut that screws onto the gauge that the line runs through. Am I missing something?
stope4 Aug 14th, 05, 11:58 AM There should be a little brass insert that fits into the hole at the end of the line. When you tighten the nut, the furl will tighten around the outside of the black line. The brass insert will prevent the furl from collapsing the plastic line.
BAMiller Aug 14th, 05, 12:34 PM Thanks thats what I am missing. If I order the fitting and line kit from ricks will it come with it? Or do you know where I can get one?
Run269 Aug 14th, 05, 12:59 PM i ordered the kit from Rick's and it does have the brass tube inside the plastic line.
kz1000ltd Aug 14th, 05, 01:52 PM I fought this same issue for WEEKS, I tried all kind of ferrules, fittings, tried copper line, you name it, I tried it, but no matter what I did, that sucker still leaked! I even went and got another reproduction gauge, and it did the exact samet thing! I sware, it was the most frustrating problem I had with my Camaro!!!!!!! I finally gave up and ordered an AN fitting and line from Jegs (50 bucks??) and after finding the correct adapter for the back of the gauge itself, I was in business, no leaks!
namz111 Aug 14th, 05, 03:09 PM what i ment by a cheap gauge was go to your local parts store and get a real cheap oil gauge from them and use that to get the furrel to tighten on the line then just disconnect it and hook it back into your factory gauge...this is very simple and it will not leak!
BAMiller Aug 14th, 05, 05:20 PM I did what namz111 said and it stoped leaking. I used the new style nut and furl. I had an adaptor that came with the line kit and used that to crimp the furl onto the line. It just bothers me a little that the plastic line will come loose in the furl and leak later. I had that happen once what a mess. It is working for now. I may take the one out of my brothers 69 ss it is all factory as far as I know and see how it is supposed to be. Thanks Guys I was starting to think I was looosing my touch or something.
namz111 Aug 15th, 05, 08:40 AM once its cripped it will never work its way loose..I understand your concern but i bet most of the leaks are cause by not getting the furrel seated correctly in the first place, I have never seen one leak because it came loose after being seated correctly
stope4 Aug 16th, 05, 01:25 PM I concur!
JohnZ Aug 18th, 05, 07:00 PM GM used a proprietary design male and female fitting arrangement at both the engine end and the gauge end, with no separate compression sleeve; with the correct plastic line (with the tiny brass inserts) and correct female fittings and ferrule nuts, they won't leak. Rick's has the correct kit.
