I have a 70 el camino that has a 350 crate engine, hei ignition, built motor with chrome alternator, elec. fans, etc. I just bought it not long ago. Car worked fine, then the gen light was coming on some then one day the battery was completely dead. I assume it had a slow drain on the battery.

I replaced the battery with a brand new one. Now the car starts fine, but wont shut off. I can turn the switch in any direction, but the engine still runs. I had to disconnect a wire at the distrubutor to shut it down.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe its the ignition switch?

thanks in advance

My brother had the same problem with his 69 Malibu, the car wouldn't shut off so he pulled the coil wire off and got the s**t zapped out of him, turned out to be the ignition switch.

thanks, i figured it out. There is a hot bracket for the electric fans that was touching the body of the car (ground), creating a very small spark. It apparently is linked to the big red wire that eventually goes to the alternator. I just bent the bracket back and problem solved..

guess what, problem is back. I found that if i wiggle one of the wires going to the voltage regulator, the car will shut down. Is it the wire, connection or you think the voltage reg. itself?

Be sure to look at the ignition switch itself. There us a rod from the key switch to the ignition switch. They have an adjustment as well as the rod itself has been known to come out.

well, i just thought i would post to close the loop and tell everyone who is ever interested in the future....the problems are solved. My gen light is off and the engine shuts down fine.

It turned out that the car had a one wire alternator, but was wired up with the external voltage regulator..i unplugged the reg. and all is fine....

I also wired my elec. fans to the accessory not the ign. on the fuse block....
