Is a horn relay really necissary for the horn to work? I rewired a car with an aftermarket wiring harness. I don't need the horn relay for a power source for anyting else, so I got rid of it.

Only need the horn for inspection reasons, and maybe for other rare occasions as the car is not a daily driver by any means. If I just hook the horn up to a hi amp momentary switch, will it work ok?

The standard wiring put bat power on the relay to blow the horns, and energized the relay by grounding the relay trigger wire in the steering wheel switch.

As long as the switch and wires will handle the current, you could use anything to put power on the horns themselves.... anything except the horn button in the column.

I re-did my 68 with a painless wiring harness and there is no horn relay and everything works good. It is not needed, painless probably uped the gauge of the wire and thought it would be ok.
