View Full Version : Installing console gauges and wiring. Questions...
jumpmaster Aug 23rd, 05, 01:09 AM I'm kinda worried after reading some other posts. I want to install a console gauge package which inturn means a Tach and a center clock. I also want the low fuel warning cable too. I am very novice at this stuff. I was planning on purchasing the console gauges, tach, cable, wiring, and clock from Classic industries.
Here are my questions.
1) Do I need a wiring book and /or diagrams to guide me through it & where do ya get that from? (I know I'll nedd something if I plan on doing it myself, whats the best to get)
2) What wiring harness do I buy to accomodate all those things? Console harnesss? Console harness with extension? Dash harness?
3) Anyone ever use PainlessPerfomance.com 18 pin wiring harnesses before?
4) Anybody have any issues with Classic industries Gauges and/or wiring?
I know it's a lot. Answer what you can. Thanks!
spideynut Aug 23rd, 05, 02:05 AM Hi, I would say Yes you will need wiring book. Assuming your car was not prior equiped with gauges you need the convertion gauge harness, they make it at any camaro house. Not sure about the low fuel warning light I think you may need the idiot light in the dash, or the lens may be there and it just needs a bulb wired to it.
No never used painless before.
Classic sales a name brand. Like most of this stuff even if its a different brand chances are its the same thing, thier all pretty good.

JimM Aug 23rd, 05, 07:56 AM The painless stuff hurts, if you're using all factory style guages, stay away. The easiest way is to buy a "guage conversion harness" and a console harness for cars with guages. Instructions are included with the conversion harness, and you keep your same dash, engine and lighting harnesses. You'll also need the console guage package, tic toc tach, and dash carrier pcb for tach cars.
Eric Kammerer Aug 23rd, 05, 10:08 AM Jim must not have noticed you're doing a 69, so no printed circuit board or tic toc tach in your case. You just have to get the 69 tach and cut the back of the mount that has the fuel gauge in it to clear the back of the tach. You also have to cut the center section out of the carrier and get the clock and bezel/lens.
69 uses a separate lead to send signal to the tach, and you have to drill a hole in the firewall just under and to the driver side of the fuse box for the tach wire to pass through.
Ron (geezer) has a website with some of the wiring diagrams, including the gauges. Address is http://www.gvtc.com/~rlaa/ and when you click on the links, you'll get an error message. Just go up to the address and remove whatever garbage popped up after the .jpg extension, and hit enter and it will work fine.
Either American Autowire or M&H are good choices for new harnesses, M&H is www.wiringharness.com . If you talk to Ken Pettey there, he can help with what you need.
With a new underdash harness and all the gauges, this is about a $1000 job.

Eric Kammerer Aug 23rd, 05, 02:20 PM He'd have to talk to someone at either AAW or M&H, or someone here who knows exactly how this works for a 69. Adding a center clock and a dash tach and console gauges in a 69 sounds like a lot of wiring work up behind the dash (if you didn't pull the harness down).
Plus, I forget some guys cars are actually more together than apart ;) and installing a new dash harness would be a pain...
namz111 Aug 23rd, 05, 06:36 PM I just finished up (well almost) doing just this to my 69 car that didnt have console gauges from factory, I got a used GM set and the gauge conversion harness, it wasnt that bad took a little time the only thing i need to do yet is run a line for the alt gauge, the conversion harness comes with the wire for the factory tach all you need to do is mount the tach in the dash and plug into it also you have to move the old eng temp light over to where the low fuel light should be and plug the wires into that. As i said its not real hard just takes some time to run everything but its pretty easy ( I was suprized) Good luck
